Discussion Rubric

Item Group Discussions

All discussions must be a minimum of five sentences, and should be written on the assigned topic or in response to an assigned topic comment from an instructor or classmate. All discussion boards will be in the Freshman Comp Network Forum.

Expectations

Class participation is an important expectation of this course. Students are expected to offer comments, questions, and replies to the discussion question that have been posed for each module as well as to classmate postings. Students are expected to actively participate in EACH module's discussion throughout the semester.

The faculty role is as an observer and facilitator. I will be reading all messages, and I will participate in the discussion as appropriate. Students may work ahead on the discussion boards but posting on past week's boards will not allow for stimulating discussions with your classmates.

Grading Rubric for Discussion Board Journals (20pts each)

Postings will be evaluated on the quality of the postings and the degree that the postings promote discussion with classmates. Participation on all boards is required and postings will be evaluated per board on the below scale. The 5 discussion assignments will be worth a total of 100 points.

  • 5 Point: Minimal response to the module question only; responses are rudimentary and superficial; there is no evidence of insight or analysis, contributes no new ideas, connections, or applications, and may be completely off topic.
  • 10 points: Posting responds to the question but does not stimulate further class discussion. Posting delivers information that shows that thought, insight, and analysis have taken place, makes connections to previous or current content or to real-life situations, but the connections are not really clear or are too obvious, and contains new ideas, connections, or applications, but they may lack depth and/or detail.
  • 12 points: Posting fully addresses the module question, delivers information that is full of thought, insight, and analysis, makes connections to previous or current content or to real-life situations, contains rich and fully developed new ideas, connections, or applications. Posting stimulates at least one substantial follow-up posting, but then you provide only minimal follow-up response to one other student's initial response.
