The Long Lost Whitby Hat
Equipment:
Needles: 1 pair 6.5mm knitting needles (US 10.5)
Yarn: Various types of yarn. I used 100% aran wool for the brown and cream, 100% worsted weight wool for the light blue, and generic acrylic yarn for the sky blue. The colour abbreviations in the pattern are as follows: MC – Cream C2 – Light Blue C3 – Sky Blue C4 – Brown.
Finishing: Yarn needle for sewing up seam, two circles of card for making pompom.
Brim:
With MC, Cast on 66 stitches
Row 1: K across. Continue in stocking stitch.
Begin chart
Row 1 (WS): work brim pattern (see below) 3 times using MC and C2.
Row 12: K across.
Hat:
Row 1: Switch to C3. RS now becomes WS, and vice versa.
continue in stocking stitch for 12 rows ending with a RS row.

Row 1 (RS): work main pattern (see below) 3 times in MC and C2.
Row 12: Switch to C4, and purl 1 row.
Crown Shaping:
Decrease Row 1: K2 [K2tog, K4] 10 times, K2tog, K2. (55 stitches total)
Row 2 and all odd rows: P across
Decrease Row 2: K2 [K2tog, K3] 10 times, K2tog, K1. (44 stitches total)
Decrease Row 3: K1 [K2tog, K2] 10 times, K2tog, K1. (33 stitches total)
Decrease Row 4: K1 [K2tog, K1] 10 times, K2tog. (22 stitches total)
Decrease Row 5: K2 tog across row. (11 stitches total)
Decrease Row 6: [K2tog] 5 times, K1 (6 stitches total)
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Use a large eyed, blunt needle to pull yarn through remaining stitches. Gather stitches, fasten securely, then sew back seam down to brim. Sew brim on reverse so seam doesn't show.
Finishing:
