The Long Lost Whitby Hat

Equipment:

Needles: 1 pair 6.5mm knitting needles (US 10.5)

Yarn: Various types of yarn. I used 100% aran wool for the brown and cream, 100% worsted weight wool for the light blue, and generic acrylic yarn for the sky blue. The colour abbreviations in the pattern are as follows: MC – Cream C2 – Light Blue C3 – Sky Blue C4 – Brown.

Finishing: Yarn needle for sewing up seam, two circles of card for making pompom.

Crown Shaping:

Row 2 and all odd rows: P across

Decrease Row 2: K2 [K2tog, K3] 10 times, K2tog, K1. (44 stitches total)

Decrease Row 3: K1 [K2tog, K2] 10 times, K2tog, K1. (33 stitches total)

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Use a large eyed, blunt needle to pull yarn through remaining stitches. Gather stitches, fasten securely, then sew back seam down to brim. Sew brim on reverse so seam doesn't show.

Finishing:

Sew in ends. To make pom-pom, follow instructions at http://www.ehow.com/how_5887_make-pompoms.html
