Northside High School
Mrs. Cottrell & Mrs. Anderson (formerly Valdespino)
Spring 2008
Syllabus
Concepts of Algebra
Information about the subject:
This course is the final part of the concepts series. Concepts of Problem Solving along with this class comprise the algebra credit necessary to graduate in Georgia. Students must have successfully completed Concepts of Problem Solving in order to enroll in this course.
The EOCT (End of Course Test) for algebra will be administered in May. It will count as 15% of the grade in this class. It is a standardized test created by the state of Georgia and will not be included in the class average until the final report card.
What every student should have when he/she comes to class:
A calculator! We will allow the use of almost any calculator (except calculator functions on cell phones) in this class, but recommend a scientific calculator. It is inexpensive and has all the necessary functions for this class. It qualifies as a scientific calculator if it has SIN, COS, and TAN buttons.
Paper and a pencil
3) A folder that can be turned in for notebook checks. This should only be used for Concepts of Algebra. 3-ring binders are recommended
The attitude every student should have when he/she comes to class:
a willingness to learn, follow directions, and show respect for everyone in the classroom!
How the grades break down: An explanation of each part of the grade
1)Tests and quizzes 40% 1) All tests will be announced in advance, quizzes
might not be announced.
2)Assignments 35% 2) This includes work done in-class and at home. We will collect work the same or the next day, or
just include it with that week’s notebook.
3)Notebooks 15% 3) A folder (described above) filled with notes, assignments, tests, and quizzes. Notebooks will be collected after every test or quiz.
4)Class Participation 10% 4) A daily grade based on how well the student meets the Class Expectations listed on the next page
5) End-of-Course Test 15% 5) A state-mandated standardized test given in May.
(of semester grade)
Class Expectations:
Arrive to class on time.
Bring the materials listed on the first page.
Be respectful of others and their property.
Be awake, alert, and on task.
Follow all guidelines for Northside High School and Muscogee County Schools.
If you do not meet the class expectations, you will be assigned detention (after school 30 minutes), have your parents/guardians contacted, and/or receive a disciplinary referral.
Attendance issues:
Students who are absent are responsible for making up the work missed. Students have three days to complete any missed work following an excused absence. If the absence is not excused, make up work will not be accepted. We have an assignment list posted in the classroom and notes can be copied from another student or from the textbook. It is highly recommended that students who are absent plan on staying after school for extra help.
*We do not accept late work.* Assignments must be turned in when they are due unless a student gets prior permission from one of the teachers.
Note to parents:
Mrs. Cottrell and Mrs. Anderson are available for extra help after-school Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. We will announce to students if we are unable to stay as soon as we are made aware of a conflicting obligation. We encourage all students to let us know if they are having difficulty with the material. The sooner we can help them understand better, the easier it is for everyone.
Progress reports will be sent via email every Friday. Additional information about the class will be posted regularly to http://www.schoolnotes.com/31909/cottrellalgebra.html. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about your student or this class. You can email us at mrscottrell@yahoo.com or manderson@mcsdga.net or call the school 748-2935 to schedule a parent-teacher conference.
