Welcome to Charleston

We are going to have a pawsome weekend, here in the South.

CHARLESTON WEEKEND SCHEDULE

Thursday…for the few people that arrive on Thursday, I thought we might try and meet for dinner at a place called A.W. Shucks at 70 State Street.  They have an outdoor area where we can eat with our doggies.  If you want to eat somewhere else on your own and explore the downtown area, I have written up a list of restaurants that have outdoor areas where you can stop and eat after doing some shopping through the downtown shopping district.  If you want to join me at A. W. Shucks, you will need to let me know so I can make a reservation for us as a group.

Friday....strolling downtown and shopping...there is only ONE doggie boutique in all of downtown Charleston…Alpha Dog/Omega Cat located at 40 Archdale Street (not counting Three Dog Bakery at 430 King Street) but it will be fun to just stroll along and have everyone stare at us and comment on our beauty.  There is a really cool doggie art gallery though that sells expensive oils and pastels….beautiful to see even if you can’t afford to buy them.  You should definitely stop in and see them!  The shop is called the Dog & Horse at 106B Church Street.

At 7pm we will all meet for dinner at Bubba Gump's Seafood Restaurant at 99 South Market Street on their outdoor patio.  Each pawson will be able to order from the menu….you will each be responsible only for what you eat or drink. We will be able to get separate checks to make this a lot easier.  I will need to know in advance if you are joining the group for dinner as I have to make a reservation in advance for these outdoor tables.  You are certainly welcome to try another restaurant on your own if you prefer.

The Ghosts of Charleston

www.tourcharleston.com

I had thought of having the group do this one night but our calendar is already so full….it is a walking tour.  The cost is $18 per person and they allow doggies to come along….they offer discounts for groups of 10 or more.  The last tour starts at 9:30 pm…nice and dark and scary!  They meet at the fountain at Waterfront Park….very convenient location.  It is billed at Charleston’s most popular walking tour, and is based on the book “The Ghosts of Charleston.”  On the tour you explore famous haunts of many ghosts that reside in the Charleston area….we are BIG TIME into ghosts down here in the South.  If the group is interested in doing this tour, the only way we could squeeze it in would be to move dinner on Friday to maybe 5:30PM or 6:00PM and do this at 9:30PM….we can easily walk to this location from Bubba Gumps.  Let me know what you want to do……..

Saturday...Attend the local Charleston Dog Show taking place at Marion Square on King Street. It starts at 8:30 in the morning, but unless you are entered in the show, we don’t have to be there that early…we can decide on a time to meet there.  If you would like to ENTER yourself in the dog show, you can do that as well and we will all be there to cheer you on. It is from 8:30 am-3:00pm and there are events for every group of dog, trick dogs...all kinds of stuff. There will be booths set up there by vendors as well. It is held at a local park (Marion Square) in the center of the downtown historic district. If you would like more information you can google “Charleston Dog Show” or call Edie Dubose, the show’s coordinator at 843/224-3972 (cell).  Mummy met a lady who knows Ms. Dubose and she said if we all came they might even make an announcement over the loudspeaker welcoming our group! but that is yet to be seen since mummy hasn't spoken with the event coordinator yet....just her friend!

After we have had enough of the dog show we will all walk over to Palmetto Carriage Tours at 40 North Market Street and take a one-hour narrated horse and buggy tour through the historic downtown area...dogs and parents all included....but I MUST have a head count for this event....the carriages hold 15 people each and I have to reserve these in advance. The cost is $22 per person, doggies free on lap. We have already filled one carriage so I am needing to start on our second carriage....I don't want anyone to be left out.

Saturday night at 7pm we will have a down home Southern BBQ Dinner in the backyard garden area of the Bed and Breakfast where I am staying. It will include BBQ sandwiches and ribs, baked beans and cole slaw …. of course there will be samplings of Southern desserts to enjoy afterwards….so don’t eat before you come to the pawty…this will be your dinner for Saturday night!!!!  Dinner tonight is courtesy of me, Millie….there will be no charge…except I will accept kisses of course!  And tip kisses too…extras for being beautiful!

This B & B only has 4 rooms available....Lady B and Tasha are sharing a room and will be staying here as well, so is Harley… so that will leave 1 room available at this location if anyone else is interested..... the room left has a king size bed. I will post all of this info in the next few days...but there are several other hotels that are within 1 mile of where I will be staying. I was just very limited as to where I could stay because I obviously HAVE to stay wherever my cocktail pawty will be held and you would NOT believe how hard it was to find a place that would allow me to hold my pawty on their premises!!!!!!

Sunday...We will all meet for a last dog walk at Waterfront Park, located at Vendue and Concord…     ON LEASHES and at the end of the stroll is a small fenced dog run, where you can let your doggie off leash inside the fenced area if you like. There is a sign posted saying you must wear your current tags and have current immunization records....so I guess you should have these on hand just in case anyone should ask for them, but there were no dogs in there when Mummy was there. It is a lovely little stroll along a waterfront area with trees and gravel paths and a few large fountains. This park is about 1/2 mile to a mile from most of the hotels that I will list. It is just out the front door, actually, from one of the hotels...The Vendue Inn.

Mummy will get all of the info on the hotels, dog friendly restaurants and sites of interest together ASAP and post it in the next few days. I plan on arriving on Thursday afternoon, April 30 and leaving on Sunday afternoon, May 3...Lady B is planning on doing the same, the last time I spoke with her.....I think Tasha and Harley are also planning on this....is this correct Tasha and Harley?

I am getting so excited .....kiss kiss everyone!!!!!!

SINCE THIS IS THE WEEKEND FOR THE DOG SHOW AND THERE ARE SO FEW PET FRIENDLY ROOMS AVAILABLE IN CHARLESTON...I AM ADVISING YOU TO MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS EARLY !!!!!!!

NOTE:  PLEASE!!!  No one is under ANY OBLIGATION to do all or ANY of these events.  If there are other sites in the Charleston area that you would like to visit, PLEASE feel free to do them.  Below, I have listed a few sites that I believe will let dogs onto the grounds, or at least onto parts of them.  They are NOT allowed inside public museums or homes.

CHARLESTON WATERFRONT PARK

Waterfront Park is located on the corner of Vendue and Concord in front of a large fountain.  The park is used to a lot of doggie traffic.  The dogs must be ON LEASHES while on the walking paths but there is a fenced dog run at the end of the walkway where you can let them off-leash to run and play.  Inside the dog-run there are water fountains to provide your doggie with water.  There is a posted sign saying that all dogs must wear tags and have current vaccinations…so have this info with you in case you are asked for it.  I did not see any dogs in the dog run while I was there.

Make sure that your doggie is up to date on his/her vaccinations and that you have a copy of them with you in case you should be asked for it by the hotel or anyone at the dog park…..just in case…..

CHARLESTON CAMPGROUNDS/RV PARKS

A few doggies expressed an interest in camping or RV parks.  Here are a few local parks that might be of interest to you.  They are NOT near the historic downtown Charleston area and you would have to drive to the events, but someone at the campgrounds could give you more information if you are interested.  Pawsonally, camping is very BARBARIC to me….I need my feather pillow and down comforter.  An electric blankie is nice too!  BOL BOL BOL
