Superhero Exercise (15 Points)

Science fiction writers are always searching for ideas for plots that will capture the interest of movie-goers. A common premise during one era of science fiction was that radiation somehow altered biological processes, transforming normal humans into super humans--some good and some evil. One example is the Incredible Hulk who, through a lab accident, developed superhuman strength that manifested itself when he was angry.

Your task is to create a ‘dynamic duo’ of superheroes by pretending it is possible to magnify the abilities governed in selective sites in the brain. You should identify a specific area of the brain that would have to be altered to accomplish the special skill of each superhero. Then, create a simple story in which each superhero’s abilities could be useful. You should identify a specific brain area (e.g., V1, anterior cingulate cortex, Broca’s, fusiform gyrus, etc.), not an entire lobe, which has lots of areas.

You will also create a supervillain archenemy of your dynamic duo. This supervillain should also have a special ability that developed as a result of radiation augmenting an area of the brain. You might make your supervillain’s special skill counter one of your superheroes. It may help to begin by listing the parts of the brain and their functions. Then, give your imagination free reign as you explore the kinds of alterations might fit the demands of a superhero’s life.
