Jubilee USA 10th anniversary celebration

Just Food DC provides delicious, sustainably produced food for people to gather over. We support cooperative organic farms in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and other sustainable producers. We use locally grown food because it is environmentally sound, tastes better, and supports small farmers. We prepare all of our food mindful of the environmental, social and economic significance of our choices and deliver food you can feel good about that also tastes good. Here’s a sampling of where the food you’re eating comes from:
Baba Ganoush with Pita and crudités
The eggplant which makes up the bulk of the baba ganoush, as well as the carrots and peppers to dip in it, all come from the Tuscarora Organic Growers Cooperative in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Buying seasonal produce from local farmers makes for a smaller carbon footprint, since your food did not have to be trucked in from far away. Local produce also provides the best flavor because farmers are able to choose breeds that taste good, not just breeds that will keep well on cross-continental journeys and look good on supermarket shelves.
Mediterranean Bison and Chicken Skewers
The Bison meat comes from Cibola Farms 65 miles south of Washington, DC outside of Culpepper, VA in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The aim of Cibola Farms is to produce healthy foods using sustainable agricultural principles and maintaining an ecologically friendly environment. Bison meat is leaner, richer and higher in protein and nutrients that beef. Bison meat from Cibola farms is free of growth stimulants, steroids, growth hormones and antibiotics. No chemical or animal bi-product is used to produce this 100% natural meat.
The chicken comes from Eberly’s. It is free range, organic chicken raised on small Amish and Mennonite family farms in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country. Conventional chickens are often raised on “factory farms,” which raise serious questions about animal cruelty, environmental degradation from concentrated animal waste, and human health risks from the use of antibiotics, growth hormones and other drugs.
Mediterranean Pasta Salad
The veggies in this dish are also from Tuscarora Organic Growers Cooperative. Buying direct from local farmers enables farmers to keep a larger portion of the sales proceeds rather than paying corporate agribusinesses to act as a middle man. Keeping corporate middlemen out of the picture also means that farmers are able to charge a fair price for their food. The olive oil and olives, while not produced locally, are organic.
Pumpkin and Apple Tartlets
Our apples are from Oyler's eden valley farms 90 miles North of DC in Biglerville, PA and our pumpkins are organic. The vanilla is fair trade and organic. The eggs are free-range organic from Truck Patch farm in New Windsor, MD. The cream is hormone-free from trickling Springs Creamery in Chambersburg, PA.
