Resolution Regarding Office Space in Lytle Hall

English Department

November 6, 2007

WHEREAS, in order to meet the demands of growing enrollment the English Department and other departments in Lytle Hall have had to hire more faculty,

WHEREAS, quality and decent working conditions are necessary components of a quality education and impact faculty members’ ability to do their job effectively,

WHEREAS, for each of the past three years there has been a reoccurring and persistent pattern of problems locating office space for new faculty, which has required Department Chairs in Lytle Hall to “find space,” often at the last minute, even though providing adequate office space is a responsibility of management under Article 31 Sec. A[1] of the CBA,

WHEREAS, there has been a lack of suitable office space for new faculty, requiring last-minute conversion of copy rooms and mailrooms into office space,

WHEREAS, a lack of suitable office space interferes with the ability of tenure-track faculty to meet their obligations for tenure and promotion,

WHEREAS, even more so, temporary faculty members are given neither suitable nor equitable office space,

WHEREAS, the New Lytle will not be built for at least seven years, ensuring that we can expect similar if not worse conditions regarding office space until that point,

BE IT RESOLVED: that the English Department demands the Dean, Provost, University President and associated offices submit a concrete plan for providing suitable and equitable office space close to Lytle Hall until the New Lytle Hall is on-line,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that such a plan not negatively impact other important programs, departments, or resources on campus,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Administration present their findings to the Chairs of departments in Lytle Hall in time for the Departments’ December meetings.

[1] Article 31, “Miscellaneous Conditions.” Section A. “Offices,” reads as follows: “The STATE SYSTEM/UNIVERSITIES shall supply each FACULTY MEMBER with suitable office space and facilities, which the STATE SYSTEM/UNIVERSITIES shall maintain.”
