StumbleUponTM Report
Description
StumbleUponTM was founded in 2002 with one goal: "Help people discover interesting or informative web content that they wouldn't have thought to search for"1StumbleUponTM is a social network that allows people to 'stumble upon' websites that have been recommended by other users that have similar interests.
"To use StumbleUponTM, a user simply installs the StumbleUponTM toolbar extension into Mozilla Firefox or Microsoft Internet Explorer. Once installed, users select areas of interest and begin stumbling. StumbleUponTM displays the top-ranking sites as voted by the stumbling community. Stumblers (StumbleUponTM members) then have the ability to rate all content they find on the internet with a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down.” Over time, as users indicate whether or not they like each newly discovered website, the StumbleUpon engine learns personal content preferences to deliver increasingly relevant results. This content discovery approach also enables users to meet others with similar interests and media preferences."2
As of 2007, StumbleUponTM had 2 million registered users.3 At least a million users have installed the StumbleUponTM toolbar extension, and users are stumbling approxiametly 20 times a day.4

Evaluation of Social Network
Live Oak 360 is seeking to actively engage their audience to create personal relationships that foster opportunity. Using StumbleUponTM, Live Oak 360 can start an open dialogue between the public and Live Oak 360
StumbleUponTM seems to be best used to start conversations. Live Oak 360 can find a plethora of relevant information through this social network, and use that information to spark conversations. However, these conversations can not easily take place on StumbleUponTM, therefore, the use of StumbleUponTM relies on tranferring the conversation to another social network.
Also, there is the option to begin an advertising campaign with StumbleUponTM. StumbleUponTM's advertising campaign allows a company to purchase a number of ad impressions. Then, the users can vote on the ads. "If StumbleUponTM users don't like the ad, it will be effectively pulled back from rotation, meaning fewer impressions."6 notes
