All Over Cables Hat

Cable Pattern:

The cable pattern I used starts with 6 stitches and increases to 12 stitches. Work the cable like a braid, keeping three sections of stitches (Your cable will start with 3 sections x 2 stitches, then it will be increased to 3 sections x 4 stitches.) Cross the stitches over on every other right side row. This chart may help you to understand much better: (It is only a suggestion--you don't have to make the ear flaps in this shape--also, there should be purl stitches on either side to make them wider.)

Materials:

Size US8(5mm)Needles

1 Ball Cascade 220 Wool

Cable Needle

Crochet hook or needle for edge and weaving in of ends

Gauge:

5 Sts & 6 Rows = 1 inch

Instructions:

Ear flaps (make 2):

Cast on 6 stitches, knit in stockinette stitch for a couple of rows, then start with your cable pattern. Knit in the cable pattern for about 6 inches.

Increase to 9 stitches(use an increase that won't make holes in your fabric)

Work 3 more rows, then increase to 12 stitches while continuing the cable pattern.

Every 4th row, increase 1 stitch on either side of your cable until you have 24 stitches on your ear flap. (Each ear flap should have 6 purl stitches, 12 knit stitches(cable), and 6 more purl stitches on the right side)

Body:

Cast on 30 stitches in between each ear flap, then join the piece (make sure it isn't twisted!)

There should be 108 stitches on your needle.

*The cable pattern is done over each of the sections with 12 knit stitches

Start knitting in the round where you joined (this should be at the beginning of one of your ear flaps.) P6, K12 around until the body of the hat measures 6.5 to 7” long.

Shaping the Top:

*Don't decrease on the rows where you are twisting cables, wait to decrease on the next row.

Rnd 1: *(SSP, P2, P2tog), K12* around

Rnd 2: Continue the pattern as established. (Don't decrease or twist cables on this row!)

Rnd 3: *SSP, P2tog, K12* around

Rnd 4 and all other even rows: Same as row 2

Rnd 5: *P2, [(K1, K2tog, K1) three times]* around, P2. (Cables will be done over 9 sts now)

Rnd 7: *K1, (K7, SSK, K2tog)* around (this will get rid of the purl sts)

Rnd 9: *K1, K2tog* around

Finishing:

Weave in all ends, use a single crochet stitch around the bottom of the hat for a border, and BOOM!!! You have yourself an amazing All Over Cables Hat!!!
