  1. Introduction to CONTENTdm

    1. Collection management system
    2. Allows users to organize digital collections and publish them on the Internet viz computer software
    3. CONTENTdm Server
      1. Web-based edition - application accessed online
      2. Acquisition edition - end-user software client
       
  2. Logging into CONTENTdm

    1. Login parts
      1. Your "class id" number, assigned: 3034
      2. Your "group id" number, assigned by instructor, in the range of 01 - 24 (two-digits)
      3. Your password is assigned by the instructor (Professor Furner)
    2. Logging in
      1. Type the web address into your browser: http://class3034.contentdmdemo.com/cgi-bin/admin/start.exe
      2. At login box,
        1. login id: 3034userxx - where 'xx' is your "group id" number (two-digits)
        2. your assigned password

      1. Collections tab - featured properties only
        1. Configuration property - featured functions only:
            1. Renaming your collection
            2. Publishing or de-publishing your collection
            3. Describing your collection

        2. Fields property
            1. Preset fields are routed to Dublin Core (DC) fields
            2. Deleting and moving fields
            3. Adding and/or editing fields
              1. Re-map DC field
              2. Change data type
                1. Text - least restrictive field
                2. Date - date input (numbers only)
                3. Full text search - a compound object (such as PDF files) can be added and searched
                  1. Only one field can be used as full text search PER collection

        3. View collection - opens a new window showing you what the collection looks like at the end-user (Web visitor) side

      2. Items tab - featured actions only
        1. Add
          1. Adding an item or URL
          2. Metadata entry
          3. Thumbnail
          4. Go to Approve, then remember to index
        2. Approve
          1. Review pending items (Edits entry)
          2. File names - leave on default option ("Generate a unique file name")
          3. After approving items, remember to index
        3. Index
          1. Index all items whenever items are added and approved, or when an item's metadata entry is changed
          2. Just click-n-go
        4. Edit
          1. Make changes to existing metadata fields's content
          2. To make changes to your existing metadata fields, go to Collections tab --> Fields property
          3. TIP: To display all indexed items, click 'browse collection'
          4. After editing an entry, remember to index
        5. Find & Replace
          1. A single field - allows changes to occur in one field only
          2. Across all fields - disregards what field is affected when making changes
          3. Change field metadata - *USE WITH CAUTION* - changes all field's content without any "undo" capabilities

  4. Main sections (Tabs) of CONTENTdm Browsing ("Using Collections") interface - featured sections only


      1. Browse
        1. Default collection displayed is the first collection ("Sample UV Photo Collection") shown on the list
        2. Click the drop-down list, then click on a specific collection, and click 'go'
        3. Sort fields by clicking on the metadata field name
        4. Click on a specific item for detailed item description with JPEG2000 extension view (with applicable items)
