Hickory Christian Academy Dress Code
A summary for Mr. Wheeler’s class
General Summary of important points:
1. To honor God and uphold the way He created boys and girls differently, uniforms will be distinctly feminine for girls and distinctly masculine for boys. Girls may purchase the feminine cut polo shirts called fit-for-her in proper colors specified in age appropriate categories on the following pages.
2. Belts are required for boys 1st grade and up.
3. No Cargo or Carpenter style pants, shorts, skorts, or skirts are allowed.
4. Corduroy pants are allowed for students 6th – 8th grade. Corduroy pants, shorts, skorts, and skirts are allowed for students 9th – 12th grade.
5. P.E. uniforms are required for all children 3rd grade and up.
6. Students may be asked to remove accessories that are distracting or inappropriate at the Headmaster’s request.
7. No outerwear is permitted in the classroom other than HCA sweatshirts and uniform sweaters. All other outerwear must be removed upon arrival to school. Do not bring them to class, The classrooms are sometimes cold so you should come prepared for that with the proper HCA approved clothing.
8. Students may wear any uniform choice in any combination of top with any bottom daily with the exception of formal day (i.e. shorts may be worn in winter or turtle necks in summer).
9. No other items may be visible under or over uniform.
10. The HCA uniform must be worn appropriately, with shirttails in, sleeves and collars buttoned, etc.
11. The uniform should be clean and neat at the beginning of each day. Uniforms must fit properly and be modest in appearance.
12. Shorts, skorts, jumpers, and skirts should be no more than 2” above the top of the knee cap.
13. The consequences for wearing the incorrect uniform or for wearing a uniform inappropriately will be considered as a disciplinary action.
14. Recently Mr. Robinson spelled out requirement for guys hair in HCA, it must meet three requirements. (Stricter requirements apply for guys playing sports)
a. It must be above the eyebrows when hanging straight.
b. It must be off the collar on the back of the shirt.
c. It must not come down below the halfway point on the ears.
15. No half sweaters or half tops can be worn on campus.
16. NAVY and/or GRAY KNIGHT’S HOODIE: Optional classroom outerwear item for girls and boys may not be worn with the formal uniform or to Chapel.
Accessories and Hair Coloring:
1. One necklace may be worn under the uniform shirt. No choker necklaces may be worn.
2. Girls may wear two earrings per ear in the earlobe, provided the upper earring is a stud. Earrings should not be distracting. Boys may not wear earrings.
3. Students may wear one bracelet per arm
4. Any other jewelry must be worn modestly. Students may be asked to remove jewelry at the Headmaster’s request.
5. Hair colorings must be modest and natural in appearance.
6. No head coverings may be worn at school (i.e.- bandanas, hats, kerchiefs, etc.)
7. Girls may wear one anklet, provided it is not distracting.
8. No visible tattoos (temporary or permanent) are allowed.
Fleece Jackets and Vests:
Students Pre School -12th grade may purchase the Fleece zip-up jacket and/or vest from Lands End for classroom outerwear. These items must be purchased in Classic Navy and embroidered with the HCA Knights Logo
“Dress Down” Fridays: (September-May)
One Friday each month (as assigned by the administration) will be designated as “Dress
Down Friday”. On these days,
1. students may wear blue jeans (or any uniform bottoms) and any of the classroom or PE uniform shirt (or sweatshirt) choices or HCA Spirit wear purchased through HCA.
2. Belts are optional.
3. The jeans must fit properly (no baggies, no holes, not too tight).
4. Shirts must be tucked into the jeans
5. Normal uniform tennis shoes must be worn.
6. Should a student choose not to participate in the “Dress Down” Friday, he must wear his normal uniform.
7. Any student who chooses not to abide by the stated guidelines for “Dress Down” days may be prohibited from participating in future days as deemed appropriate by the administration.
8. These days are meant to be a fun alternative for the students and we expect everyone to respect those intentions by abiding by the guidelines.
9th-12th Grade Expanded Uniform Policy (Rhetoric Stage)
BOYS - PANTS
- Belted chino pants or chino shorts (knee-length) of cotton or twill fabric in black, brown, khaki, navy or olive (no
denim). Corduroy is allowed.
- Pants and shorts may be pleated or flat front.
- Pants must be appropriately sized at the waist and in length. (Pants must not touch the ground).
- Pants must stay up and not sag.
- Cargo shorts or cargo pants are not allowed.
- Carpenter shorts or carpenter pants are not allowed.
- Tight fitting pants or shorts are not allowed.
- Bell-bottom pants are not allowed.
BOYS-SHIRTS
- T-shirts are not allowed.
- Solid color short or long-sleeved polo shirts,- Solid color short or long-sleeved collared shirts evergreen, and solid color
turtlenecks in red, white, navy blue, light blue, light yellow, soft pink, black, or evergreen.*
- Rugby shirts are not allowed.
- Flannel shirts are not allowed.
- Print shirts are not allowed (for example, no florals, no camo, no polka-dots, no stripes).
-NO MANUFACTURER’S LOGO, INSIGNIA or DESIGN of any kind, with the exception of approved HCA spirit wear.
- Shirts must be tucked in at all times.
-A white or gray t-shirt may be worn underneath with no visible imaging. The t-shirt sleeve may not be longer than the
shirt sleeve.
BOYS-SWEATERS
- Solid color COTTON, long sleeve, v-neck or crew neck pull-over or cardigan, or vest, with a collared shirt or turtleneck
worn underneath in solid red, white, navy blue, light blue, light yellow, soft pink, black, or evergreen.*
- Must be appropriately sized (ie. no oversized, extra long or tight-fitting sweaters).
BOYS-SOCKS
- Socks are required for all students and must be visible.
- Socks must match pants or shoes.
-Athletic socks may be worn with tennis shoes.
BOYS-FORMAL UNIFORM – SPRING MUST BE PURCHASED FROM LAND’S END.
-Navy blue chinos (pleated or plain-front - Land’s End).
- Short sleeve polo in Chambray Blue - Land’s End.
-Navy blue socks or socks that match the color of their shoes.
BOYS-FORMAL UNIFORM – WINTER -MUST BE PURCHASED FROM LAND’S END.
-Navy blue chinos (pleated or plain-front - Land’s End).
- Long sleeve blue oxford - Land’s End.
- Stripe tie (Classic Navy/Dark Crimson ) - Land’s End.
GIRLS- SLACKS & SHORTS
- Chino or cropped pants, or walking shorts (no more than 2” above the top of the knee cap) of cotton or twill fabric in
black, brown, khaki, navy or olive. Corduroy is allowed.
- Pants and shorts may be pleated or flat front.
- Pants must fit modestly at the waist. Tight-fitting pants are not allowed.
-Knit pants are not allowed.
- Cargo pants or cargo shorts are not allowed.
- Carpenter pants or carpenter shorts are not allowed.
- Conservative flares are allowed. Wide bell-bottom pants are not allowed.
- Pants must be appropriately sized in length (pants must not touch the ground).
GIRLS-SKIRTS
- Solid color skirts in cotton or twill fabric in black, brown, khaki, navy or olive. Corduroy is allowed.
-Appropriate undergarments must be worn (ie. slip).
- Skirts should be no more than 2” above the top of the knee cap and may be no longer than the top of the ankle.
-Skirts may not rise immodestly when sitting.
GIRLS-SKORTS
- Solid color skorts (no more than 2” above the top of the knee cap) in cotton or twill fabric in black, brown, khaki, navy or olive. Corduroy is allowed.
GIRLS-SOCKS
- Socks must match bottom piece or shoes.
-Athletic socks may be worn with tennis shoes.
GIRLS-SHIRTS AND BLOUSES
- TIGHT-FITTING CLOTHING IS NOT ALLOWED.
- Shirts should not reveal midriff skin even when bending or raising arms.
- Modest necklines are required.
- Solid color short or long-sleeved polo shirts in red, white, navy blue, light blue, light yellow, soft pink, black, or
evergreen.*
- Polo shirts should be tucked in, unless styled to be worn out, provided they do not reveal midriff skin.
- Solid color turtlenecks (including mock turtlenecks), in red, white, navy blue, light blue, light yellow, soft pink, black, or
evergreen, short or long-sleeved.*
- Solid color collared tailored blouses or shirts styled to be worn outside (not tucked in) or tucked in, in red, white, navy
blue, light blue, light yellow, soft pink, black, or evergreen.*
- Tunics are not allowed.
- See-through fabrics are not allowed.
- “Lace-up” shirts are not allowed.
-Western style shirts are not allowed.
-NO MANUFACTURER’S LOGO, INSIGNIA or DESIGN of any kind, with the exception of approved HCA spirit wear.

GIRLS-SWEATERS

- Must be appropriately sized (ie. No oversized, extra long or tight-fitting sweaters).
- Turtleneck sweaters ( in red, white, navy blue, light blue, light yellow, soft pink, black, or evergreen.*) may be worn
without an approved shirt or blouse underneath.* Land’s End color swatches are available in the school office. Shirts
not purchased from Land’s End must be within 1 shade of the swatch color.
GIRLS-FORMAL UNIFORM- SPRING -MUST BE PURCHASED FROM LAND’S END.
- Classic Navy A-line skirt - The skirt may be no more than 2” above the knee cap.
- 3–Quarter sleeve white oxford blouse (Light Sea Blue Argyle Sweater Vest optional)
GIRLS-FORMAL UNIFORM – WINTER -MUST BE PURCHASED FROM LAND’S END.
- Classic Navy A-line skirt - The skirt may be no more than 2” above the knee cap.
- 3-Quarter Sleeve White Oxford blouse with the Light Sea Blue Argyle Sweater Vest.
GIRLS- SOCKS: (with Formal Uniform)
-Navy knee socks will be worn with loafer style shoes or neutral colored panty hose with dress shoes.
-No short socks allowed (ie. Athletic socks, “bobbie socks,” etc.)
DRESS SHOES:
Girls: Should wear navy, brown or black pumps (heel maximum or 2 inches) or dressy loafer style or slip-on shoe. Slides, clogs, or sandals are not allowed with the formal uniform. Closed toe and heel are required.
Boys: Should wear DRESS shoes in brown or black. No “Sketcher” style or hiking style shoe. Boots are not acceptable.
TENNIS SHOES:
- Tennis shoes are an optional item. They must be neat in appearance, simply styled with shoestrings. Tennis shoes may be worn on any day when the formal uniform is not required. Neat, simply styled low tops and mid tops are allowed with white or neutral colored background (gray, black, khaki, blues) with any color accent. Shoes should not be distracting. High tops, lights or wheels of any type are not permitted.
OPTIONAL SHOES:
Girls:
- Maximum 2 inch heel.
-Open-toe shoes in any style are not allowed.
- Closed toe “mule” or slide may be worn. Mules should be neutral in color (navy, brown, khaki, black). These may be
worn without socks.
- Closed toe sandals, ie. fisherman’s sandals. These may be worn without socks.
- Platform shoes are not allowed.
-Wooden clogs are not allowed.
- Patterned shoes are not allowed, for example: florals, plaids.
Boys:
- Low top all-weather mocs (see Land’s End catalog for example) in black, brown, tan, or navy.
-Boys may not wear sandals or slides.
Consequences of falling to abide by guidelines:
Any student who does not abide by school dress code and is written up for a dress infraction three time will be required to attend school in their formal chapel uniform for 5 class days following the infraction. If on any of those days the student is not in their formal chapel uniform they will be given a detention.
