The group moved into the basement of the new OSU Physics Research Building in June 05. A commercial low-temperature STM (Createc) was installed in July. After an initial debugging phase, the instrument now meets quality benchmarks including atomic resolution imaging, atomic manipulation and inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy. This system is now being used to study the electronic properties of small clusters with tunneling spectroscopy.

In parallel, a home-built low-temperature STM has entered its debugging phase. This instrument has been designed to optimize optical access, while retaining capabilities in tunneling spectroscopy and atomic manipulation. We have begun preliminary experiments related to tip-enhanced optics and semiconductor magnetism.
