OT-38

"The Golden Calf”

Exodus 32:1-33:6

Big Idea

Love God, not stuff.

Verse

Matthew 6:24b - “You cannot serve both God and money."

Materials

Five pennies, cup

Setup

1. Write the verse on a chalk/wipe board. Set up a table in the middle of the room. Place the pennies and the cup on the table.

2. Divide the children into two groups and have them sit on opposite sides of the table. Inform one group they are the "Heads" team and the other they are the "Tails" team.

3. On a chalk/wipe board, write "Heads" in the top left corner and "Tails" in the top right corner.

Activity

1. Read through the verse as a group once.

2. Explain the following:

Our big idea today is "Love God, not stuff." In this verse, Jesus tells us that we need to choose one master: God or money (our stuff). We can't serve both.

To help us remember this, we use pennies as we memorize our verse.

3. Each time you read through the verse as a group, do the following: erase one word of the verse from the board. Select a child to come up front. Have him/her put all the pennies in the cup, place his/her hand over the top of the cup, shake it for a few seconds, and then place it face down on the table. Count up the number of heads and tails, and add the appropriate number of tallies for each team on the board. Repeat until all the words of the verse have been erased. Total up the number of tallies for each team.
