[8:53] Keystone Bouchard shouts: The general idea is to remain
consistent with the neo-classical language of the existing campus at
the base level, while at the same time enabling a wide range of
flexibility and customization with platforms above.
[8:53] Keystone Bouchard shouts: The idea is to blend some of the best
ideas contributed so far into an open air classroom structure (Veeyawn)
at the ground level, which builds on the existing neo-classical
tradition of the existing campus. Hovering above this more formal
structure are 5 platforms that can be moved or added on over time,
based on the University's current needs. Faculty would have several
pre-designed platform options to choose from, ranging from interactive
classrooms (Azwaldo) to natural and landscaped platforms (Daruma) to
structures representing the curriculum outline (Zage). Others might be
placed totally empty, leaving it up to the students and faculty to
customize based on their class content or curriculum. As new technology
emerges, new pre-scripted platform modules can easily be added to the
mix. They don't necessarily have to hover over just this parcel, but
could be deployed on any of the University's islands and by any
department, or several can be coupled together and be used for research
projects, etc.
[8:53] Keystone Bouchard shouts: These platforms can remain very
flexible, active and dynamic - shifting and changing, visually
representing the current status of the virtual campus as it changes
over time - while leaving the ground plane as a more consistent, formal
and familiar campus and commons area.

Keystone Bouchard shouts: The central idea is to have a virtual
classroom rezzer that will generate a structure with platforms,
consistent with the teachers curricullum outline. Students come inworld
asychronously and walk the platforms viewing/hearing the data, or as a
group for classes and teacher adds chairs/lectern in front of a
platform and conducts classes
[9:01] Keystone Bouchard shouts: The central idea is to have a virtual
classroom rezzer that will generate a structure consistent with the
teachers curricullum outline.
STEPS:
1- The teacher prepares a note with an outline including: SUBJECT, Headings, Subheadings, etc.
2- Teacher inserts that information into a widget, that will rezz a
3 or 4 level organizatonal structure (like an org chart but 3D) with
scripts embedded in it
3- Once the structure is rezzed the
teacher splits the land below it in 4X8 miniparcels and places/adjusts
the structure above them so as to be able to play different media in
each platform
4- Teacher inserts the media URL in each parcel and places a media
player in each platform, as well as other objects, such as URL,
e-books, notes, and anything else she/he wants the students to see and
learn
5- Students come inworld asychronously and walk the
platforms viewing/hearing the data, or as a group for classes and

[9:05] Latha Serevi shouts: This cleverly finesses SL's severe
limitation of one media per parcel. We can't see it in operation here,
though, can we, because this land doesn't have the odd mini-parcels
needed?
[9:05] McCall Savira: true enough. do you have to have a parcel for each media?
[9:06]
Latha Serevi shouts: McCall asks, do you need a parcel per media. Well,
you can only display the _same_ media to everybody standing in a given
parcel. So, you can either change the slides for everybody, or have
them move from parcel to parcel to see the different slides/videos.
[9:06] Jen Dratman: it's a fascinating idea. streaming media is a real fiddle to set up though
[9:07] McCall Savira: ok. ty. :)
[9:07] Bryan Caldwell: The tools are getting better as we go, though....
[9:07] Jen Dratman: yes.. its a very interesting idea, but tech problems might kill it
[9:07] Latha Serevi: Jen worries that streaming media is hard to set
up. But it can also be a web page per parcel, if that's easier...

[9:17] Keystone Bouchard: I don't recall that, no
[9:18] Bryan Caldwell: I must be thinking of an SF illustration.
[9:18] Keystone Bouchard shouts: I agree with what Omei proposed in
writing, and Keystone put from in his design proposal, that the design
of this new classroom should take cues off of the existing buildings on
the Alabama campus. I do not, however, feel that the design should have
to slavishly replicate the existing architecture in exact form and
detail. Just as architecture throughout the ages has used it past
styles to inform the new, with this design iteration proposal, I've
"sketched out" the idea that a building can have certain echoes to the
past, but at the same time suggest a new direction away from the
restraints of the real world and one that is more appropriate to the
virtual world. With this design proposal, I was trying to keep enough
of the old vocabulary of these tradition campus buildings, so new
comers would still be able to 'read' and 'interpret' their uses, but on
the same token start introducing another vocabulary that tries to
reflect the possibilities in the virtual realm.
[9:18] Keystone Bouchard shouts: For me, the back drop of the
traditional, allows you to more easily come to terms with interpreting
the new, where too big of jump into a purely abstract and virtual
vocabulary would leave users confused and alienated, but too
conservative a jump, would deny users of the new and varied
possibilities the virtual world has to offer as well.

With this proposal, I'm maintaining the idea of respecting the
University's legacy of classical architecture, while also taking
advantage of new opportunities virtual space affords. I believe the
architectural language of this project should reflect the positive
notion of augmenting their physical campus, suggesting new
opportunities, not undermining or challenging the architectural lineage
they have upheld for decades.
[9:41] Keystone Bouchard shouts: I agree with elements of Theory's
proposal, and Daruma's suggestion that these buildings can become a
visual metaphor for exploring the new opportunities virtual
environments afford. As such, the classical shell of the main building
is bisected by a virtual form that suggests the new possibilities of
virtual space. This new angular axis, inspired by Theory's last
proposal, could align with and engage other campus elements with
pathways or water features leading to other campus buildings and
landmarks. The classroom on the ground plane can be dynamically
transformed (by clicking a simple menu) into any of the 6 required
themes, and expand or contract to accommodate a variety of class sizes.
Visitors or instructors can choose more formal arrangements or opt for
more open, natural spaces, depending on the current need. This
interactive classroom would feature many of the elements described in
Azwaldo and Veeyawn's contributions.
[9:41] Keystone Bouchard shouts: Instructors are also able to create
new platforms for classes, faculty offices or research projects as
needed. Some might be permanent, others might be added or deleted as
needed. They can be easily accessed either by flying, clicking a
landmark or direct teleportation using a simple mini-model of the
campus map showing platform locations. By locating a class platform at
any altitude, the instructor can ensure better privacy and avoid
interruption by random visitors passing by.
[9:41] Keystone Bouchard shouts: The content on each platform can be
created and customized by the students and staff who are using the
space. User-generated content is a key benefit to using Second Life for
education, and inviting students and staff to build their own spaces
should be encouraged as much as possible. Students can keep track of
current UA events, gather information about their classes, teleport
directly to class locations, review UA video or web content, or see if
their instructors are online inside a central information portal that
displays information about all of UA's virtual classrooms.

[10:06] TREE::1226631159::LEAF::1227045520 whispers: Hello St Spad
[10:06] VISTA BAD GIRL SUPA AO v1.2 extended BACKUP: Touched.
[10:06] Iota Ultsch: yes! and it could turn into 'fall' if you are failing
[10:06] Keystone Bouchard: i'm describing these in voice -
[10:06] Ceri Watkins: the naughty kid could sit on the spiked part
[10:06] Keystone Bouchard: but feel free to chime in and add your own description Veeyawn
[10:06] Iota Ultsch: lmao ceri
[10:06] McCall Savira: eek
[10:06] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: Oh great, lemme see if voice is working for me today
[10:07] TREE::1226631159::LEAF::1226973641: The notecard is being delivered.
[10:07] Bryan Caldwell: If all the votes for the prof were negative, HE or SHE could end up spiked!!
[10:07] Ozzy Wozniak: hi :-)
[10:07] Keystone Bouchard: you can just explain with text
[10:07] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: This other one is a little more traditional
[10:07] Tara5 Oh: see you all soon off to listen to NASA announce the dark energy energy results! Great tour thanks Keystone!!!
[10:07]
Iota Ultsch: i LOVE this one it's ludic...just like the other girl's
proposal with the voices....sl is about play...learning and having fun
[10:08] Tara5 Oh: Stella Nova for NASA
[10:08]
Veeyawn Spoonhammer: I tried to blend the arches and columns of RL
architecture with a very open feel since we have no rain ;)
[10:08] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: It's also a little more interactive
[10:08] Iota Ultsch: oh cool
[10:08] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: The sign is scripted so a teacher can let everyone know what class is being taught
[10:08] TREE::1226631159::LEAF::1226973641 whispers: Hello
[10:09] TREE::1226631159::LEAF::1226973641 whispers: Hello
[10:09] TREE::1226631159::LEAF::1226973641: The notecard is being delivered.
[10:09] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: lol
[10:09] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: I'll add an umbrella giver in case pranksters like you show up
[10:09] Habitaue Giotto: what is this meterology class?
[10:09] Firethorn Zhangsun: Tornados--in keeping with the local feel of Alabama...
[10:10] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: I've got one more in here somewhere, again, more of a sketch, one sec
[10:11] Keystone Bouchard: ok
[10:11] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: Oops, put it on the tree
[10:11] TREE::1226631159::LEAF::1226973641: The notecard is being delivered.
[10:12] Keystone Bouchard: don't delete those leaves! ;-)
[10:12]
Veeyawn Spoonhammer: And the panels in the corner would have the same
slides for a presentation as the cube above me so the students could
see but the teacher could reference without having to move their camera
all around
[10:12] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: Oh, it was scripted so the clear button works
[10:13] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: The pole was just to mark the center during construction
[10:13] Habitaue Giotto: what is the pole for?
[10:13] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: Not to teach elicit dance moves
[10:13] Bryan Caldwell: I was wondering.....
[10:13] Bryan Caldwell: Well....there are pole dancercize classes now....dont assume.
[10:13]
Veeyawn Spoonhammer: My plan was to also script in walls that could be
turned on and off by the teacher to limit outside distractions
[10:14] Keystone Bouchard: now THAT's a really good idea
[10:14] Keystone Bouchard: addresses some of Omei's ideas about 'inside' spaces having less lag
[10:14] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: Right
[10:15] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: Oh and let me show one more thing, which is still in the works...my quizzing device
[10:15] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: I'll put it down here
[10:16] quizzer: Touch me to get the first question
[10:16] signQuizTree: Your notecard is on the way.

[10:16] signQuizTree: Your notecard is on the way.
[10:16] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: It's not ready because it needs to be notecard programmeable

[10:18] quizzer: Correct!
[10:18] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: Well, if you get them wrong, you get two chances to answeer sub questions
[10:18] Iota Ultsch: oh cool
[10:18] Habitaue Giotto: this is a great concept
[10:19] Bryan Caldwell: Make it a bit smaller...each student could have one for a given quiz....talking just to him
[10:19] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: Right
[10:19] Iota Ultsch: ijn otherwords the quiz machine giggles and emotes whilst asking the question?
[10:19] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: Or, it oucld be left setup for students to take the quiz when they can
[10:19] Bryan Caldwell: ....and watch the forest sprout in the classroom
[10:19] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: Tying it back to a database to keep track of scores and who already took the test etc
[10:19] Keystone Bouchard: Wow
[10:19] Iota Ultsch: does it track alts too?
[10:20] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: But it's very early, still working it
[10:20] Bryan Caldwell: LOL
[10:20] Iota Ultsch: lol
[10:20] Keystone Bouchard: Get it into the tree! Let the community work it! =)
[10:20] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: Well, I would assume you would have a roster of students who have to take the test
[10:20] Iota Ultsch: oh cool
[10:20] quizTree: Welcome Veeyawn Spoonhammer
[10:21] quizTree: Great! Have a seat.
[10:21] quizzer: Touch me to get the first question
[10:21]
Bryan Caldwell: Ultimately though...you couldnt stop cheating...a
desperate student could give his SL login to a kid who'd aced the quiz
already...
[10:21] quizzer: Wrong.
[10:21] Theory Shaw: i was having computer problem there early in the
session, so my transcript is a bit spotty.... does anyone have a more
complete one they can send?
[10:21] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: So here's what happens if you get a wrong answer
[10:21] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: If I get this one wrioing, I fail
[10:21] quizzer: I'm sorry you've failed the quiz.
[10:21] Iota Ultsch gave you Snapshot : , UA ESPRMC (208, 71, 26).

[10:21] quizTree: Great! Have a seat.
[10:21] quizzer: Touch me to get the first question
[10:21] quizzer: Wrong.
[10:21] quizzer: Correct!
[10:21] Keystone Bouchard: thanks Iota! =)
[10:22] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: If I get the sub question right, I get another
[10:22] Iota Ultsch: yw!
[10:22] quizzer: Correct!
[10:22] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: If I answer the 2nd correct, I get back on track

[10:22] quizzer: Wrong.
[10:22] Keystone Bouchard: Wow

[10:22] quizzer: Correct!
[10:22] quizzer: Correct!
[10:22] quizzer: You passed the Quiz!!!
[10:22] Keystone Bouchard: fireworks
[10:23] Iota Ultsch: you should create some kind of heavenly place where good students retire for refreshments
[10:23] Bryan Caldwell: Hmm...can you imagine the smart alec kid answering questions wrong just to make his tree bigger??
[10:23] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: ha
[10:23] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: Well, that kid would get a poor grade, ha
[10:23] Iota Ultsch: like a type of cyber-mensa
[10:23] Habitaue Giotto: it could almost work like a bar graph
[10:24] Habitaue Giotto: each student could have their own color or something
[10:24] Iota Ultsch: we could use this in business
[10:24] Veeyawn Spoonhammer: Yes, in business and for customer surveys and stuff
[10:24] Iota Ultsch: so we have a visual representation of our financial health
[10:24] Theory Shaw: i've gotta go.... thanks keystone for hosting. bye everyone.
