Best Web 2.0 Tools for Educators
This workshop is designed for k-20 teachers from all curriculum areas.
In this session we will initially meet as a large group in the ISTE beach area and then  break out into smaller discussion groups.

In the small groups you will be asked
   a) to share your own personal favourite web 2.0 tool .. and say 'why'
   b) come to a group 'consensus' on which web 2.0 tool should be the first for a teacher (with no previous Web 2.0 experience) to try.

We will then reconvene as a large group for feedback from the individual groups ... and prize giving ;-)

For more information visit

---------------------------------------------------
Note:

Skills
During this session is it expected that attendees will become more comfortable using Second Life, we will specifically look at:
   - how to filter/control voice when working with groups close together
   - how to manage the use of voice in a small group .. e.g. 'who gets to speak next'
We will use a Google docs page to manage/record the session

GROUP 1

GROUP 2
Facilitator: Corinne Fleury

GROUP 3
Facilitator: Kimmer Jameson/Kim Flack

Tek Galicia: My students created a wiki about their new dollar coin and they are able to get input from other students.
I use twitter for pd and I am beginning to wikis with students
Penelope Drucker: I have been having fun with tools like voki and blabberize and glogster
Mandie Mimulus: Has anyone used Gizmoz
Tek Galicia: I have heard good things about glogster, but I haven't tried it.
Penelope Drucker: what is Gizmoz?
Mandie Mimulus: animated avatars
Mandie Mimulus: engaging
Penelope Drucker: that is what Voki is too
Mandie Mimulus: yes like voki but more kid friendly

Blog example  http://blogs.vbschools.com/lionspride/2009/02/19/a-day-in-the-life-of-a-second-grader-at-shelton-park/
Avatar example http://www.sheltonparkes.vbschools.com/Tech%20Projects/faygizmoz.wmv

bigd Flanagan: I like to use facebook with my team teaching partners - you can collaborate when you both have time since school can be way too hectic + silly facebook quizzes make good face to face icebreakers with high school students

Sal Braveheart: I like think of SL as place for teachers to call their own, where they can go to meet friends/colleagues, to recharge and relax.
Tek Galicia: SL is great to create a PLC with other educators from different places.
Penelope Drucker: I can't believe the access I have to really top notch educators
Mandie Mimulus: also I record here in SL and bring back to my students

Sal Braveheart: Non-techy - I think the best Web 2.0 tools for teachers starting out is a blog. It gives the blogger a chance to talk about what it's like learning the new tool, if they need to work through that. It affords the blogger a degree of control as they can choose whether or not to publish the replies/comments they receive.
Sal Braveheart: Blogging sounds like a big step, but if you have a helping hand it's not so scary. And it's fun.
Praxislady Witt: we have f2f and a closed blog for only them and we post "parking lot' questions but n the blog for everyone to participate

Group decided wikis and blogs were best starter tools... but gizmoz (with students) and SL (with educators) were things to strive for

GROUP 4
Facilitator: Jenn Forager

===============================
Favorites:

Thunder Insippo: Wikis (Uses pbwiki>now pbwork, and wikispaces)
Also recounted how Twitter helps her professional life since it allows her to pass word to the tech crew and get around procedures in place to manage tickets. Also allows access to senior management, who keeps the twitter channel open at all times. (CommonCraft Video on wikis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dnL00TdmLY)

Victoria Bury: Blogs, uses them to post class materials. Also a fan of twitter, using Tweetdeck. Switching to WordPress from Blogger.

Oronoque Westland: /my new favorite is a blog, WordPress in particular...it makes it "easy" to create a website...I am using it to provide the structure for an e-portfolio.
Oronoque Westland: Twitter HUD or TwitterBox (to tweet from within SL)

Eddy Grunstein: Self-avowed newbie, not even a cell-phone. RL taking up too much time but starting to teach a class in SL next week.

Pinocchio Jiminy: I have yet to use Twitter, but do use blogs a bit, mainly for students to journal.

Pinocchio Jiminy: I use http://www.wetpaint.com a bit. (Group commented that this program is often blocked.)

Zage Farman: Twitters.

Jennette Forager: Ning.com (recommends: quakerquaker.org as example.)

Thunder's Wisdom on Twitter: "Follow the right ten ppl, lurk and learn."

GROUP 5
Facilitator:  Lousie Borgnine

Pmat:  -Live Journal -  I keep up with family, friends and collegIn teaching I have made effective use of wikis.
Personally, probably LiveJournal. I keep up with a lot of family, friends, and colleagues. And I like the detailed control it gives me over privacy. Live Journal permissions- Wikis have been dead simple
She thinks the whole ranges has a place
Cat:  Everything!  Twitter-- Wikis- she loses lots and lots of wikis- catch on quickly... podcasting has lots of potential.  5th graders have done well with it.  Almost missed this meeting if it had not been for twitter.  Writing stories with kids..using twitter.  Tweetdeck.... Blogging is great!  Setting up server at school... Blogs are blocked.  So many tools blocked by administration.
MrKevin:  Bulletin Board....family groups and cooking groups... with Students..... Instant Messenger.... easy to use.... 40 GED students... email and IM is the only way to communicate

Cat;  email was so important -  but not so much these days  with so much other ways to communicate

Mr. Kevin:  Lots of  job  applications going through email

Blu:  Students need to use applications and will need email for jobs... On line surveys would be could

Louise"  Twitter:  Facebook... good for reconnecting.  And Second Life  - steep learning curve

Twitter loss of threads... no back and forth

Pmat:  Linked IN....

Roland :  Facebook - lots of hooks to 3rd party tools- ThinkQuest-build projects.

File sharing, audio, New York Times in Facebook
Twitter - goes out to cell phones  more kids have cell phones than computers

Twitter wikis are easy to sell-very simple-few privacy issues
Cat:  very simple and have lots of uses

Group has decided that wikis are the best

[18:54]  Eme Capalini is Online

[18:57]  Norma Underwood: one of our schools got shut down this week and the kids still came into SL
[18:57]  Roxie Neiro: That's OK

[18:57]  Cyrus Hush: pocasts, wikis?
[18:57]  Cyrus Hush: skype?

[18:58]  Kaitlyn Sommerfeld: Wordle is excellent
[18:59]  Roxie Neiro: podcasts for me - I am elementary and I think we could use these like books on tape
[18:59]  IM: Holger Gilruth: web or networked version

[18:59]  Norma Underwood: Wordle takes text and creates a word graphic based on the number of times the word is used

[18:59]  Norma Underwood: Wordle takes text and creates a word graphic based on the number of times the word is used
[18:59]  Cyrus Hush: wordle.com
[18:59]  Cyrus Hush: hmmm
[18:59]  Kaitlyn Sommerfeld: Great for summarizing and characterizing
[18:59]  Norma Underwood: great for famous speeches or poems

[19:01]  shamblesguru Voom: DimDim.com ...... web-based version of Elluminate for Web meertings ..... get free room for 20 people ... works in browser

[19:01]  Mano Enoch: bubbl.us
[19:01]  shamblesguru Voom: me tooooooooo
[19:01]  Norma Underwood: I like bubbl.us
[19:01]  Mano Enoch: for concept mapping

[19:01]  Roxie Neiro: What about PBS Kids island? I think it is a lot like neopets. Does that count for the little people?

[19:04]  Mano Enoch: Google docs or zoho for teachers and students

[19:04]  Kaitlyn Sommerfeld: Use Skype to connect easily with classrooms around the world
[19:04]  Cyrus Hush: skype, podcasts, facebook and dim dim
[19:05]  Roxie Neiro: I haven't used skype to do this, but we have used webcams to have high school creative writing students share their work and partner to create pieces with our fourth graders

[19:07]  Mano Enoch: ok I am getting tired of typing now

[19:07]  Roxie Neiro: Is this called hands-on voting?

[19:21]  Kimmer Jameson: oh i'm sorry - my voice is out

[19:21]  Tek Galicia: We were looking for tools allowed by our district also.
[19:21]  Jennette Forager: tell us waht Mandy talked about?
[19:21]  Kimmer Jameson: we felt it was best to start teachers off with blogs and wikis... things districts allow

[19:28]  Pmat Pinion: Overall, we felt that wikis are the best place to start. Several of us have made good use of them for sharing information and comments. They are easy to set up and use, they get going very quickly, and they don't have too many issues with firewalls and permissions and such. We also had a lot of interest in twitter, because of its availability on cell phones for teachers whose students don't have easy access to computers.

[19:29]  Mano Enoch: Our teachers like wikis over blog where kids even can come and edit
[19:29]  Calyps0 Janus: Ahh..students have cellphones before computers?
[19:29]  Mano Enoch: some techpundits for some reason block the blog but not the wikis created by kids and teachers

[19:33]  Gwynna Cleanslate: I invited my students into our private Ning site, and it took less than a weekend for them to set up their own pages, friend up with others in the class, and post comments to the various forums I had set up for the different lessons we were working on. I can upload their worksheets, reviews, info sheets, and they can upload their papers for me to review and give feedback. They love our Ning site, and it's so easy I have to recommend it as the best first tool for interaction.

[19:37]  Random Name Drawer shouts: Norma Underwood has been chosen at Random and is the winner!
[19:37]  Random Name Drawer shouts: Cat Mortenwold has been chosen at Random and is the winner!

==================================
Today there are six of us on the stage myself (Shamblesguru) with Louise Borgnine, Corinne Fleury, Jennette Forager, Kimmer Jameson, and Credo Rolland
No detailed intros .... have a look in our profiles if interested in knowing more about any of us .... or in fact anyone here .... "datamine your neighbour"
The six of us met for almost 2 hours yesterday to plan this session ... so that at the end we hope you feel it has been a valuable use of your time
Hopefully you appreciate that we really are not sages on a stage ... but are only facilitators ... and if you want to call me anything ... call me 'chief learner' ...
/me note to self .... stop rambling
If you have any questions at any time just throw them into public chat .... I'll probably not be able to watch private IM very easily (but will try)
==================================
THE TASK FOR TODAY ..... slide should be up on the presentation screen
==================================
To start I'd like to highlight a Second Life voice menu and some SL tools.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
VOICE CONTROLS
Voice Control ... you are going to be working in small groups during this session and it is highly likely that there will be some overlap with voice so you'll be distracted by those in other groups.
So what you need to do is to MUTE the avatars you do not want to listen to.
So how do we do this?  (should be a relevant slide of SL menu up on the presenter)
Go to the bottom right hand corner of your Second Life Viewer ....
/me is about to show off by taking out his laser ... whatever you do ... don't comment anything rude in public chat
Click on the two speech bubbles to get the"Active Speakers" window come up
Highlight (by clicking on once) the name of the avatar you want to MUTE  .... then click on the little loudspeaker.
That should mute that avatar ..... it's also cool that the avatar itself actually goes grey on your screen ... looks really weird ... try it now on your neighbour .... they are not talking anyway .. but you should see them grey out.
BTW ... in this Active Speakers box you can also control the volume of individual Avatars voice ... if very soft .... or if sometimes too loud and distorted.
OK ..... MOVING ON .... (please UNMUTE ME .. if you MUTED ME)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
THE PRESENTER SCREEN
Pre-caches images along the bottom ... so the next images are already in your computer memory ... and so then rez up quickly when go on the main screen
There is a lock on the bottom right hand corner .. on the side ... so can be made public or private  .... and even when private the owner can give others access
It is resizeable
At the end of the session I'll change ther permissions on this one
--------------------------------------------------------------------
VOICE MODERATOR
I'm going to leave this to the small group sessions to explain this if they use it .... if not I'll return to it at the end of the workshop when we are back together as a whole group
--------------------------------------------------------------------
GOOGLE DOCS
We are experimenting with using Google Docs to manage/record this session .... to find the URL of the Google Docs page click on one of the URL Sticks on the grass either side of the front of the stage.
Or use http://tr.im/lv5L
or the full URL http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ddf7p68s_837hfxc3hhs
In fact you can even take the whole stick if you wish as I've set them to full permissions.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
FREE GIFT
Free gift .... at the end I'll be giving away two of the digital countdown clocks
Just click on the  glass jar on the wooden case on the right of the stage to add your name
At the end (as the owner) I can have the tool give me names at random .... I found this tool (not free) in a hostess club as part of my SL research ... but could have potential in workshops when picking names from a group at random
--------------------------------------------------------------------
END OF BIT ABOUT TOOLS AND TIPS (might be others in the small groups ... and hopefully you will share some of your own experiences then)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
/me note to self ... remember to breathe
THE TASK NOW .... will be to split up into small groups
There are five stations around the beach area ... choose any ... or follow one of the facilitators when they leave the stage (they are wearing a numbered hat)
In the small group you are asked individually to share your favourite Web 2.0 tool/application/website ... and say why it is your favourite.
The group is then asked to come to a group 'consensus' on which web 2.0 tool should be the first for a teacher (with no previous Web 2.0 experience) to try.
We will then all come back here for feedback from the group work.
ANY QUESTIONS?
OK .... on your marks ... get set .... GO !
--------------------------------------------------------------------
