STAGE 2 – Determine Acceptable Evidence
'What evidence will determine understanding?'

Assessment Tasks: To Assess for Deep Understanding

Assessment for learning (ways you will gather students’ prior knowledge):

  • ‘Chatterbox’ activity: Students engage in a ‘Chatterbox’ activity in pairs. Under each flap of the chatterbox is a question designed to assess students knowledge and thoughts about culture, what part clothing plays in culture, traditional Japanese clothing and the similarities and differences between clothes worn in Japan and Australia. Students use the ‘chatterboxes’ to conduct an ‘interview’ with their partner, discuss their answers and bounce their thoughts and ideas off of each other. Students then bundle their thoughts and ideas as a whole-class and these are displayed in the classroom.

Assessment as learning (throughout the study checking for misconceptions):

  • Entry on class blog: Students take turns to leave an entry on the class blog to reflect on their learning, and compare their ideas about clothing and culture at the beginning of the unit with their thoughts and ideas now. What have I learned? How have my ideas changed from the beginning of this topic?
