INTRODUCTION

As you know, Global Warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air and oceans.
Everyday we hear of the changes on our planet caused by global warming. These changes are affecting not only nature but also the lives and homes of millions of people.
Unfortunately there is always some news with shocking images on the media about hurricanes, droughts, species endangered because their habitats are disappearing... But, maybe, most worrying of all is the effect of the changes in climate on people who live near the ocean shore (like we do!) and who already suffer from drought, flooding and poverty.

Is there anything we can do about it?

QUESTIONS

Write down on your notebook the answers to the following questions:

1. Look at the graphic of global temperatures on wikipedia. Can you tell how much the temperature of the world has raised since you were born?

2. Is the green house effect necessary for our planet?

3. How long do the greenhouse gases stay in the atmosphere?

4. Human activities contribute to the warming of our planet. How could our society help reducing it?

5. Can you name the signs (fingerprints) of the already visible events of the global warming? Which are the most frequent in Europe? And in our area?

6. Can you name the types of impacts (harbingers) that will become more frequent with continued warming? Which ones are most probable in our area? Why?

THE BIG QUESTION

As we have seen, human activities contribute greatly to the warming of our planet. Many scientists, politicians, organisations and common people have started worrying about it. Since the 90s the word GLOCAL has become widely used. It means:Think global, act local.

How do you think you can be glocal at school? And at home?
