ABC-Earth Systems
Course Syllabus
Course Description:
ABC is a course that explores Applied Biology and Chemistry through the study of Earth’s system. The course is designed to introduce students to the basics of these disciplines as well as to give them real world application.
Instructional Philosophy:
In order for students to become scientifically literate they must have a working knowledge of their physical and natural world. Academic success is achieved by joining working knowledge and application.
Major Course Objectives:
1st Quarter: Processes and Interactions of the Earth’s Geosphere
2nd Quarter: Processes and Interactions of the Earth’s Atmosphere
3rd Quarter: Processes and Interactions of the Earth’s Hydrosphere
4th Quarter: Composition and Structure of the Universe and the Motion of the Objects Within It
Major Course Goals:
The major course goals are: 1. Acquire the knowledge and skills to gather, analyze and apply information and ideas. 2. To acquire the knowledge and skills to communicate effectively within and beyond the classroom. 3. To acquire the knowledge and skills to recognize and solve problems. 4. To acquire the knowledge and skills to make decisions and act as a responsible member of society.
Major Course Projects and Instructional Activities:
Daily participation in class.
Designing an individual experiment.
Lab activities.
Course Assessment Plan:
Daily participation points.
Scores on written tests and homework assignments.
Scores on lab activities.
Course Expectations:
Students are expected to come to class prepared to participate.
All students are expected to contribute in lab activities.
All assignments should be turned in on a timely basis.
Supplies and Materials Needed:
One three ring binder (2-3inch).
Loose-leaf paper
Pen, pencil and highlighter.
Dividers for notebook.
Homework Policy and Grading Scale:
Daily participation points 20% of grade
Tests and lab activities 35% of grade
Homework 35% of grade
Bell Ringers 10% of grade
