Social Networking: Del.icio.us

This tutorial explains how to create an account and start using del.icio.us (http://del.icio.us)

Getting started:

  1. Go to http://del.icio.us and create an account

  2. The system will invite you to post a link to your bookmarks and tags in your browser. I recommend that you do that because it is easy to add pages to your library of resources that way.

  3. Once you did that, you will have to close and reopen your browser to see the icons

  4. Now, go to a web page that you would like to bookmark in del.icio.us and click on the TAG icon. A dialogue box will open asking you how you want to tag that bookmark.

TAGs is the label or category name under which you would like to save that link. To be consistent, tag with the same label all pages that are part of a same topic. You can use several tags for each bookmark.

  1. When you have tagged several pages, click on the del.icio.us icon in your browser and it will open your del.icio.us page with all the links that you had saved.

How do I install the buttons?

If you only need to install the buttons in your browser, go to https://secure.del.icio.us/register?step2 and follow the instructions to install the buttons in your browser.Remember that you may need to close your browser after the installation, and when you re open it you will see the buttons.

Share your links with others and collaborate

You can invite others to share links with you and create a network of users with similar interests. You can be collaborating in the creation of a library of resources for a particular topic. Follow the instructions below to add others to your network and to share a library

  1. To add other people to your network, you need to know their del.icio.us IDs. Then you click on “your networkfrom the top menu in del.icio.us; or go to http://del.icio.us/network/ and this is going to show a textbox to add others.

  2. Co create a library: You can agree with others to save a links under a specific tag and everybody will add links using that same tag. To get the updated list every time someone in your group adds a new link, you need to “subscribe” to that tag.

To do that click on subscriptions in the top menu of your del.icio.us page and the page will open with a place to subscribe to a tag. Once you have subscribed to one and want to subscribe to another, then you click on subscriptions and it is going to show a box on the right similar to the image “your subs” (see image). You click “edit” to add new subscriptions there or to delete previous subscriptions.

  1. Your links (i.e. http://del.icio.us/yourname/yourtag ) can be shared with the rest of the world, or can be kept private. You make that decision every time you tag a link. You will see a box that says “do not share” if you check that box, it will make your links visible only to you.

Application

Tell your students and colleagues to save links with the course rubric as a tag. Then you subscribe to it, and you will see all the links that people have suggested for your course readings
