TRANSCRIPT OF "TTWADI Syndrome" Slideshow
(available at http://www.slideshare.net/moodlefan/ttwadi-syndrome-973554)
Slide 1
TTWADI is a sydrome. A very common one.
Slide 2
Watch the monkeys, particularly the new arrivals and the response of their predecessors.
Slide 3
4 bored monkeys. Need some food…
Slide 4
“Ah, a banana!” says the first monkey. He is switched on and looking forward to a snack.
Slide 5
As he climbs, his fellow monkeys are happy but…
Slide 6
As the first monkey approaches the higher steps to reach the banana, all of them are splashed with a cold shower. Brrrrr…they don’t like it!
Slide 7
The adventurer returns to a miserable bunch of wet monkeys.
Slide 8
There is that banana again. Who will try to get it?
Slide 9
“Hey fellas, look - banana!” says the second monkey. He wants it!
Slide 10
But as the second monkey approaches the higher steps they all get a cold shower again. Something is going on…
Slide 11
After a while, one monkey is replaced with a newcomer. Let’s call him Mr Cool. “Woohoo! Look guys, a banana!” says Mr Cool. He wants to go and get it…
Slide 12
But as Mr Cool steps up on the stairs, he hears horrible growling noises from his fellow monkeys who do NOT want him to go and get that banana. By now, you can guess why.
Slide 13
Mr Cool (STILL DRY!!!) does not want to upset his friends so he returns to keep the peace. “There must be something seriously wrong with that banana” he thinks.
Slide 14
Another of the four original monkeys is replaced with Mr Rainbow. He is another observant monkey and quickly spots that banana.
Slide 15
He goes for it but the other three, INCLUDING MR COOL (!), start growling and threatening.
Slide 16
Well, no banana for Mr Rainbow. “That banana must be pretty bad” he thinks.
Slide 17
Mr Astronaut replaces another of the original four monkeys (you know, the ones that got wet?) and yes - spots that banana. ‘Woop, woop’
Slide 18
Now three of his new friends, including Mr Cool AND Mr Rainbow growl and attack him before he even gets to the stairs.
Slide 19
‘Ha, all is good’ think the three, while Mr Astronaut is put back in his place.
Slide 20
Finally, the last of the original monkeys is replaced by Mr King. Yes, you guessed what he spots and gets excited about.
Slide 21
‘Nooooo, don’t you dare go get that banana’ shout Mr Cool, Mr Rainbow and Mr Astronaut.
Slide 22
“I may be Mr King but I ain’t arguing against my fellow monkeys” says Mr King and returns without his trophy.
And the point of all this? Neither Mr Cool, Mr Rainbow, Mr Astronaut or Mr King EVER got wet. They have no idea WHY it is a bad idea to get that banana yet they strongly deter anyone else (new) to get it.
They suffer from the TTWADI syndrome - That’s The Way We’ve Always Done It.
Slide 23
TTWADI afflicts millions of people every day. It can keep us safe (licking a live electrical wire springs to mind) but it can also halt the positive change without people really knowing ‘why’ or questioning the commonly held views.
Big thanks to “The Commited Sardine” Ian Jukes at http://web.mac.com/iajukes/thecommittedsardine for the idea.
Now go and ask why shouldn’t you get that banana…then get it if you can!
