Dear Friends,
It is great to be back after a much-needed and indeed very pleasant week in Florida. I visited a UCC church in St Petersburg and am happy to say that they reminded me of you all. I felt very welcomed in their midst. Truly an important aspect of being Christian: welcoming the stranger!
Today we will be looking at the great Call of Saul (Paul) and also the Call of Ananias to be a catalyst to greatness. Let us consider this week how God is calling us. Blessings and Peace, Pastor Deborah
On November 4th several folks will join our church. If you are interested in joining please contact
Pastor
Deborah this week. Simply call the office at 346-5235 and leave your name and
phone number.
Pastor Deborah will contact you and explain what membership
entails.
LAKE AVENUE BAPTIST CHURCH TO HOST WORKSHOP ON
UNDERSTANDING LGBT CULTURE
Learning how churches can open themselves to people of different cultural backgrounds – especially those of a different sexual orientation or gender identity – will be the focus of a workshop from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Lake Avenue Baptist Church, 70 Ambrose St., on Sunday evening, October 28.
Leading the workshop, which is entitled “When Gay and Straight Worlds Collide: How to Make Room for Grace,” will be the Rev. Eric H. F. Law, founder and executive director of the Kaleidoscope Institute for Competent Leadership in a Diverse Changing World. Rev. Law has been a consultant and trainer for building inclusive community for over 15 years working with religious, healthcare, educational, and civic organizations in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe. He is the author of five books, including his most recent, Finding Intimacy in a World of Fear. He is an Episcopal priest, a composer of church music, a photographer, and a playwright.
The workshop will start with a simple supper at 6:00 p.m., and the evening program will begin around the supper tables. The purpose of the workshop is to help Christian congregations and individuals understand the difficulties involved in becoming and living as a welcoming congregation, either for LGBT people or for any group from a different culture.
The Women’s fellowship has decided to sell quarts of soup and "already made" apple pies on
November 10th. It will be eat-in or take out. A sign-up sheet will be going around so that you can sign up to help or purchase. In preparing for this event, WE NEED YOUR MASON QUART JARS!!! If you can donate jars, please bring them to the church OR talk to Bonnie Haller about having someone come get them.
The Ecumenical Book Review will be held Thursday, November 1st at the Wadsworth Library in Geneseo at 11:30 a.m. William Cook will review The Jesus Machine by Dan Gilgoff. The book explains how James Dobson, Focus on the Family and Evangelical America, are Winning the Culture War. (Bring a bag lunch, coffee and cookies will be provided by Lakeville UCC Church!!). If you can help bake cookies, please contact Donna Hoefer.
The Lima Presbyterian Church (corner 15A and Route 5 & 20) is sponsoring a Roast Pork & Dressing Dinner on Saturday, November 3rd, from 4 to 7 pm. The prices are $9.00 for adults, $4.50 for children 5 to 12, and children under 5 are free.
