Access Issues
Green Point - The plant property goes to the top of the bluff so as soon as you are off the JACE property you are on the plant land and so you are illegal. North Olympic Land Trust owns the easment and until they change their minds, they say NO ACCESS. Furthermore, until the Trust For Public Lands changes their stance there is no way we can make a difference.
The Dump - Darryl Woods talked to Vince Cooke, they expect to seal the dump soon and the money is in place via the Puget Sound Partnership. The plan is to put a park there and so the site and road will not be closed. Vince is in support of surfers and would like to see us help to make sure everyone is buying their rec permits. Vince would also like to have a seperate beach cleanup for the dump. He would also like some signs to indicate where to dump trash so that the road doesn't get blocked.
The Cape - Having problems with surfers blocking the driveway. Local landowner has put up a gate and people are still parking in front. Suggestions include signs to help people know where to park, improve the parking area and make it obvious where to park. Darryl talked to him about improving the existing landings, he liked the idea and said he would talk to the landowner.
The Elwha - Darryl talked to Elwha Tribe contact who acts as the policy coordinator and says there is currently no public parking and that parking at Charles' house is not allowed. Darryl is on it and looking into spots for parking. The general idea is that if we can promote the use of recreational permits by surfers when using tribal lands then we can present the Elwha Tribe with the information from the Quilute and Makah Tribes regarding how much money they make each year off the sale of recreational permits. The end goal is to get the Elwha Tribe to offer recreational permits so that surfers can park on tribal land.
Action items
-
Write up a guide for where to buy recreational use permits at each tribal area and submit to Coastal Currents. (Eric W)
-
Organize a beach cleanup at the the dump and the wedge to help outreach efforts with the Makah tribe (everyone)
-
Work on creating and posting signs, two on each side of the dump as Vince Cooke recommended to Darryl (everyone)
Twin's Sani Can Workgroup Report
Arnold has spoken with Kurt Bruch about the idea of placing a sani-can at Twins to help with the human waste problem. Kurt supports the idea so we need to determine the best physical location next and get approval. We discussed the idea of operating the Twins Sani-can only between the months of October and May to cut down the costs, everyone present at the meeting approved of the idea.
Action items for next month:
-
Find a diagram or map of the Twins area and identify options for sani-can locations, bring to next meeting (Dave Parks)
-
Continue discussion with Kurt and local Twins residents to work on approving a location for the sani-can (Arnold and Darryl)
-
Talk to Goodman about liability if someone vandalizes the sani-can. (Michelle W.)
-
Create a donation can model for use in area businesses aimed at raising funds directly for the sani-can projects and present at next meeting (Eric W)
