Conceptual Design
project #1

Artist
"...the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work...all planning and decisions are made beforehand and the execution is a perfunctory affair. The idea becomes the machine that makes the art."
Company
" We believe great design has enormous power and we're trying to use it to change the world...Our design philosophy is built on the balance of the three criteria: beauty, performance, and sustainability...[T] he integration of these concepts defined a new standard for apparel...[N]o one had made a dedicated effort to integrate all three with unflagging commitment to each. Until now."
Comparison
The intangible is most important to both the company and the artist.
Differences
The artist compares the idea as fuel for the machine of design
The company believes that design creates a new standard for apparel,
and they claim that no one has thought in this way before.
Inspired design process
By comparing and combining I decided to focus my process into making the intangible (or abstract) tangible (literal). I went to my fully stocked library of literature and started looking at Victorian poetry, and dark prose. I found lots of purple, murder weapons in the form of braided hair, netting, birds. After struggling to find the perfect inspiration piece of literature, I decided the quote:
“The Bird is fighting its way out of the egg. The egg is the world. Whoever wishes to be born must destroy the world. The bird is flying to God. ” from the novella Damian, by Hermann Hesse
Decoding the final idea/ materials used
I decided to work with in the the 4 steps of this abstract human life-cycle in the quote (compared with birds cycle below in parentheses), to make the four realistic steps in a birds life cycle.
The first successful peck (Birth)- bird under a milky sheer fabric, beak on shows on the outside. white fabric is the dress and the applique. Hem is shaped to conform to the egg shape
Boundaries are noticed (teenager)- bird floating in netting
The struggle (life)- Netting capturing the lower fabric, bird escaping side seam
Freedom (death)- Bust of bird sits on the shoulder of a dress with netting
