Computer Catalog Vocabulary


Call Number: The letters and numbers that tell you what kind of item something is and where it is located in the library. Call numbers can be found in the computer catalog and on the items themselves (usually on the spine).

Dewey Decimal Number: If a call number has actual numbers in it (like 123.45), those numbers are Dewey Decimal Numbers.

E: In a call number, E stands for Easy. E books can be in the Story Room, or if they have red call number labels they are located along the Wall of Dewey.

BR: In a call number, BR stands for Beginning Reader. These are located in the Story Room and have orange call number labels.

F: In a call number, F stands for Fiction books.

YA: In a call number, YA stands for Young Adult books. These are books written especially for teens.

AB: In a call number, AB stands for Audio Book. These are books on tape or CD.

VID: In a call number, VID stands for Video. This includes VHS tapes and DVDs.

CD: In a call number, CD stands for CD, as in compact disk. CDs are located in the Media Center.
