Unit 4 - Chemistry
  • Chemical Bonding
    • Ionic Bonds - A bond in which atoms are bound by electrostatic forces (charges); Involves Metals and Nonmetals;the strength of ionic bonds depends on the difference in charge between atoms
    • Covalent Bonds - A bond in which an atom's electrons are shared to create a compound; Involves Nonmetals; the strength of covalent bond depends on the angular relation between atoms

  • Periodic Trends
    • Atomic Radius - Measured as one-half the distance between the two nuclei in to adjacent atioms
      • Decreases left to right.
      • Increases top to bottom.
    • Ionic Radius - The Radius of at Cation(+) or an Anion(-); Positive ions have less electrons therefore, they have a smaller size than their neutral counterpart.
    • Electronegativity - the ability of an atom to attract toward itself the electrons in a chemical bond; Elements with high electronegativity have a greater tendency to attract electrons than do elements with low electronegativity (p356, Chang)
    • Ionization Energy - the energy required to overcome the attraction of the nuclear charge and remove an electron from a gaseous atom; The energy required to remove the first outermost electron (not the first shell) is called the first ionization energy.
