Publicity and fundraising are underway at numerous churches. Questions about when the money should be sent in to Habitat were answered by Lynne who explained that ideally all funds for the house would be received by the time the house is done. Some have collected and sent money already, others will do that throughout Lent.

Saturday was the first day of the official build schedule. Eight individuals signed up to work but only 3 showed up. Lynne will send an extra e-mail mid-week to remind people about their commitment and to ask them to remove themselves if they cannot come so the slot will open for others.

Parish group days are currently scheduled as follows:

3/7 (8) individuals – no lunch sponsor

3/14 (7) individuals – no lunch sponsor

3/21 Holy Trinity Student Parish – will provide lunch

3/28 Christ the King – will provide lunch

Two new families are going before our Board of Directors on March 12 for approval. Assuming they go through, we expect one of them to be assigned to the Catholic House. If this is determined before the next meeting, I will send a special e-mail announcement.

The website is up an running with blog updates from Steve being added each week. Here is the link with G-R-E-A-T pictures

Gifts-In-Kind (GIK) have come through including generous electrical and plumbing donations. The furnace that was donated prior to the beginning of the project will also be counted toward the home’s GIK value.

Our next meeting is Tuesday evening, April 14 at 6:30. Special guest Sarah Teare, Habitat’s Housing Grants Manager, will join us and explain how homes are appraised, how grants are sought and applied, and how the final mortgage amount is determined for the homeowner.

A flyer was distributed to those present and is also attached to this e-mail -- for family recruitment. At this time, we need more families to apply for our program. Any way you can help spread the word through your congregations, other Catholic Charities or any agencies or avenues you may have, please help us recruit families for our homes.

Lynne

Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008 - 7:00pm

Sr. Mary Ellen Brennan St. Joseph Dexter

Lee Hirth St. Joseph Dexter

Dan Clark St. Joseph Dexter

Scott Wright Christ the King & St. Francis Ann Arbor

Kelly Bennett Holy Trinity Student Parish, Ypsilanti

Lynne Punnett HFH Faith Relations & Volunteer Coordinator

The meeting began with reports of financial and gifts-in-kind pledges toward a 2009 Catholic House from the various parishes including:

St. Francis, $10,000 pledge possibly more plus volunteer & meal support

St. Joseph Dexter, $4,000 pledge plus volunteer & meal support

St. Mary Chelsea, $3,000 pledge plus volunteer & meal support

St. Andrew Saline, no financial pledge but may do a fundraiser, yes to volunteers & meal support

Holy Trinity Student, Ypsilanti $2,000 pledge plus more possible plus volunteer support plus GIK of all plumbing supplies donated by parishioner from John E Green and other GIK possible

St. Joseph Ypsilanti attended first meeting but has not yet reported back

Summary: $24,000 of $40,000 goal pledged including $5,000 GIK (could be valued at more)

Current shortfall: $16,000

Scott Wright was to attend a meeting of the priests on Friday and report to them the project status at this time.

Next Meeting: The committee will meet again Tuesday evening, February 3 at 6:30pm hoping that all necessary funds and GIK will have been pledged and a kick off date would be scheduled soon thereafter.

Build Schedule: Tentatively, we would begin early to mid-February and would expect not less than 8-10 Fridays and Saturdays of work before the project would be completed.

Lynne described the various volunteer roles and asked those present to discuss with parishioners what they would like to do. Steve Polgar is houseleader working on Saturdays, he will communicate with Friday leader Doug Towner about assignments. Each day “Crew Leaders” are also needed, which just means you’re not responsible for the whole project beginning to end, but you have some skills and can take a small group of unskilled volunteers for Steve and complete an assigned task. Crew leaders can be regulars throughout the build or can be be very helpful for one-day. The majority of Habitat volunteers are unskilled and we welcome that, but having some help (crew leader) for the house leader on site is invaluable.

Brief discussions included which Priest might be asked to be there for the kick-off day and blessing and especially important would be the presence of a priest at the dedication. Steve Polgar expects to make these arrangements as the time draws near. Other topics included website updates and the use of a blog throughout the build for Steve to report updates to everyone.

Habitat for Humanity - Catholic House Meeting

Monday, Nov. 10, 2008 - 7:00pm

Present were:

Steve Polgar St. Francis Ann Arbor

Rod Payne St. Mary Chelsea

John Bohlenger St. Mary Chelsea

Sr. Mary Ellen Brennan St. Joseph Dexter

Lee Hirth St. Joseph Dexter

Dan Clark St. Joseph Dexter

Robert Elka St. Joseph Ypsilanti

Deacon Paul Ellis St. Andrew Saline

Chuck Yonka St. Francis Ann Arbor

Kathy Pustell St. Francis Ann Arbor

Scott Wright Christ the King & St. Francis Ann Arbor

Kelly Bennett Holy Trinity Student Parish, Ypsilanti

Lynne Punnett HFH Faith Relations & Volunteer Coordinator

Sarah Stanton HFH Executive Director

The meeting began with prayer followed by introductions. Steve Polgar then shared the history of the Habitat for Humanity Catholic House families that have been helped in the last 12 years. He explained that he and Scott Wright met with the priests this summer to determine if there was interest in sponsoring a 2009 Catholic House. There they determined the parishes should be invited to an informational meeting to talk about the possibility and here we are.

HFH Executive Director Sarah Stanton then described the Habitat program, how Habitat’s zero percent interest loans are for the 30-60% of median income population, the partnering component including 300 hours of sweat equity by each adult in the family, the educational classes and other requirements for home ownership. She described the affiliate’s strategic plan to grow from helping 5-8 families a year buy their own home to helping 20 families each year. She explained typical financing of the homes and how our affiliate and others all over have left the traditional new construction model ($75,000 needed from sponsors) and at least here, we are now almost exclusively rehabilitating pre-owned homes ($40,000 sponsorship.) Gifts-in-kind (GIK) were discussed including examples of electrical, plumbing and HVAC labor and materials trades being donated thereby reducing the amount of cash that is needed to fund the home. The mechanicals mentioned are just a few examples of GIK. Anything that HFH would normally pay for and can be donated is significant and goes toward the $40,000 fundraising goal.

Those present agreed that the need here in Michigan is great and that the opportunity for Habitat to help two families at a cost of $35,000-$40,000 for the sponsors rather than one family at a cost of $75,000 is opportune and attainable. Each one present agreed to return to their parishes to determine the level of interest and possible financial commitment for a 2009 Catholic House. The group will come back together on Tuesday, December 9 at 7:00pm to report on feedback and reaction from the parishes.

Scott shared the website URL with the group, which he will keep up to date as we proceed with a project, pictures, postings, and so forth. To check out the Catholic House Habitat website, go to:

EXAMPLES OF GIFTS-IN-KIND

(GIK)

At Habitat for Humanity (HFH), we attempt to engage as many partners I building affordable housing as possible. One very effective way of engaging partners is through gifts-in-kind. HFH International has been very successful in recruiting several key partners across the country. Some of those partners include:

  1. Whirlpool – a refrigerator and stove with oven for all Habitat homes

  2. Dow – Exterior blue insulation board for all our homes

  3. Certainteed – Shingles for some Habitat homes

  4. Valspar –primer and paint for all Habitat homes

  5. Larson – Front and rear entry screen doors for each home

  6. Hunter Douglas – Blinds for bedrooms and bathrooms in all Habitat homes

In addition, our local Habitat affiliate and house sponsors are encouraged to recruit gifts-in-kind. Some of those listed below are for new construction only whiles others items apply to all homes. Examples include and are estimated to be valued at:

Cabinets $2,000

Concrete work $3,700

Electrical $3,500

Excavation $6,000

Flooring/Carpeting $3,600

Foundation/

steel posts/beams $10,500

Framing lumber $3,500
