Recently more and more students realize that there are some problems existing in the canteen.

 

2.1 Problem 1

 

To begin with, the first problem that raises my concern is the arrangement of seats. 

 

2.2 Problem 2

 

In addition to the arrangement of seats, ventilation is also a critical problem affecting the condition of canteen.

 

3.1 Solution to Problem 1

 

Regarding to the seat arrangement, making them to become a circular arrangement would receive my top priority if it comes to improving the canteen situation.

 

3.2 Solution to Problem 2

 

On the other hand, the solution for solving the problem of ventilation is to improve the ventilation system.

 

4.1 Evaluation/Conclusion

 

In conclusion, the square arrangement of seats and the bad ventilation are the problems that we can encounter in canteen.

 

 

 

 

Redesign is possible

 

Recently more and more students realize that there are some problems existing in the canteen. Some of them complain that the lighting is too dim for the users to see the food menu clearly while some blame for the degree of comfort because they feel hot and hopeless. No matter who is blameworthy for this issue, the fact is that there is a need to redesign the canteen. In this report, I will highlight two of the main problems inside the canteen and talk about the two possible solutions respectively.

 

To begin with, the first problem that raises my concern is the arrangement of seats. It is not hard to understand why the seats are arranged in a rectangle shape and do not leave any free space between rows. As everyone knows, every shop owner hopes to earn as much money as they can. However, this would inconvenience customers and worsen the eating environment. By placing the seats with a rectangular shape, people who don’t know each other would normally sit as far as they can, creating a space in the middle between them. This middle space, unfortunately, is not easy for anyone to sit on. In addition, by utilizing most of the space, the width of the passage becomes limited. I remember that last time I tried to get into the middle space with a hamburger and a big drink and I carelessly dropped all the food on the floor because I lost my balance! It was embarrassing. That is, I want to say hardly can a person get in the “middle seat” with a narrow passage and a lot of people sitting beside. As a result, the middle space is just a place for someone to put things on rather than that for someone to sit on thus, rearrangement of seats is necessary.  

 

In addition to the arrangement of seats, ventilation is also a critical problem affecting the condition of canteen. In order to have a clear concept about ventilation, the meaning of it must be well defined. Ventilation is the process by which fresh air is introduced intentionally to displace the room air from an occupied space. However, rarely can we open the windows in the canteen if we want to let some fresh air coming in because those windows are locked or sealed. The consequence is that it would worsen the situation. As all of us know, human being is a source of pollutant. We produce carbon dioxide and breathe in oxygen. In a case that where many people gather together, that is the canteen in City University, the concentration of carbon dioxide would increase dramatically. Moreover, as Hong Kong has a characteristic of high humidity, the canteen having bad ventilation would definitely become a breeding place for the bacteria. As a result, the consciousness of people, as well as the degree of hygiene would be worse than that we’ve expected.

 

Regarding to the seat arrangement, making them to become a circular arrangement would receive my top priority if it comes to improving the canteen situation. Rarely do we have chances to discover this kind of seat arrangement, despite the fact that in other countries like UK, most of the seats in University, if not all, have the circle arrangement of seat and this makes a different situation when compared with Hong Kong. In fact, David Woo, one of my tutors in City University who was studying abroad, told me about the seat arrangement in his studying places and he also pointed out that he didn’t adapt to the environment in canteen here because he used to have his privately space. That is to say, the original seat arrangement in Hong Kong is so crowded that making people feel uncomfortable or even his personal space is being occupied. However, by placing the seat in a circular menu, for sure it can widen the passage for people to get on the seats, increasing the personal space would also be possible.

 

In addition, the solution for solving the problem of ventilation is to improve the ventilation system. Some of the windows which are locked or sealed can be replaced by some other types that can be opened by our own mean. Additional fans could also be installed for this purpose. These installations together increase the flow of air in the canteen and more fresh air can be introduced intentionally to the canteen and thus reducing the chance for the grow and multiply of bacteria. Moreover, extension of the canteen to the outdoor area is a natural method for making everyone energetic. We are therefore, not limited in a particularly space. It is not only for weak people up, but also making a good view for people.

 

In conclusion, the rectangle arrangement of seats and the bad ventilation are the problems that we can encounter in canteen. However, by changing the seats into a circular arrangement and enhancing the ventilation system, the above problems can be combated. As a matter of fact, a huge work would have to be carried out for such an arrangement and the installation of the ventilation system. A large sum of money is needed and students would also be affected. Nevertheless, by considering the benefit for students, it is worth to work on it and work can be done during the holidays so as to minimize the problems created by the construction work. I dare to say, debate would be raised unless measurement is taken!
