Green Smoothie

Really you can put anything you like into a green smoothie, but here's the basic recipe we use almost everyday.  It's important to mix up your greens so we alternate greens every week and keep the fruit relatively the same.

1 apple chopped with skin still on
1 pear chopped with skin still on
1 banana
Enough water or juice to blend it to whatever consistency you like.
Any kind of green leafy vegetable you like.  We use kale, spinach, swiss chard, romaine lettuce, parsley, endives, arugula, collard greens, mustard greens, dandelion greens and carrot tops.  Spinach has the mildest flavour and is the easiest to find.  Use any amount you like.  I like to pack as much greens as I can fit into my blender, but you may want to start out with a smaller amount.

Throw all of the above into a blender and blend until smooth.

The benefits of consuming your greens everyday are massive.  Victoria Boutenko wrote a book about it called Green For Life which I highly recommend reading.  I guarantee that you will notice a sizable difference in your overall mood and energy levels after drinking a green smoothie a day for a week.  I guarantee this because if I don't have one now I feel very lethargic and sad.

It's great for kid's because with all the fruit you really can't taste the yucky greens.  Lily drinks a sizable amount of green smoothie every day without fail.

Remember, the smoothie recipe above is just a basic recipe.  You can add whatever suits your fancy and I'm sure it'll taste great.  We like to add frozen fruit in the summer to make it nice and chilly and refreshing.  Play around and have fun!
