The following resources are available in the Berntsen Resource Center. All the music references are listed first with useful, supplemental references following. They are all located on the Main Floor in the Reference Collection. The call number for each item is indicated just after the title. The dates in brackets indicate the most recent copyright date available. This guide is not an exhaustive list, but represents a core collection in music. American Song: the Complete Musical Theater Companion REF 782.81 B623 Ed. 2 [1996] This two-volume set deals with all on and off-Broadway productions from 1877 to the Fall of 1995. It sites over 4,800 musicals, theaters, some artists, songs, chronological lists, and titles.
ASCAP Biographical Dictionary REF 780.922 Am35 [1980] Contains brief biographical sketches of living and deceased members of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers.
Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians REF 780.92 B178 Ed. 8 [1992] Classic work of musical biography. The 2400 entries include composers, conductors, singers, and instrumental virtuosos, as well as important philosophers, scholars, critics, teachers, librettists, patrons, and impresarios from every country and every period of music.
Basic Music Library: Essential Scores and Sound Recordings REF 780.16 B292 Ed. 3 [1997] This resource deals with music libraries, book lists, history and criticisms and has a useful bibliography.
Biographical Dictionary of Afro-American and African Musicians REF 780.92 So88 [1982] Covers over 1500 musicians of African descent from past and present.
Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music REF 780.92 H261 [1996] Contains information about composers and performers dealing with Western concert music.
International Who's Who in Music and Musicians' Directory (in the Classical and Light Classical Fields) REF 780.92 In8 [2001] Sketches of living composers, singers, arrangers, writers, soloists, orchestral players, and managers in the classical and light classical fields. Over 7500 entries.
Music Reference and Research Materials REF 780.16 D85 Ed. 5 [1997] Contains an annotated bibiliography.
New Grove Dictionary of American Music REF 781.773 N42 [1986] Four volumes on many aspects of the American musical tradition.
New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians REF 780.3 N42 [2001] Comprehensive reference on music and musicians. 20 volumes.
New Grove Dictionary of Opera REF 782.103 N42 [1992] Four-volume work dedicated specifically to the genre of opera.
Oxford Dictionary of Music REF 780.3 K384 [2006] A revised edition of the most comprehensive, detailed, and reliable one-volume music dictionary available. Includes 12,500 entries, and covers musical topics of all kinds, such as musical terms, instruments, critics, producers, and styles. Also included are 5000 composer and performer entries.
Twentieth-century choral music: an annotated bibliography of music suitable for use by High school Choirs REF 784.1016 W593C [1990] A bibliographic guide to exciting and challenging music materials appropriate for use with high school age singers.
