Berntsen Library Print Indexes



On Shelf - The following indexes and abstracts are available at the Berntsen Library on the Main Floor on the low shelving near the entrance. The dates in brackets indicate the years held at the library.


Art Index [1989 - current] covers archaeology, architecture, art history, crafts, industrial design, photographic and other art-related topics. Some yearbooks and museum bulletins are included.


Biography Index [1955 - current] will help you find biographical information on historical and literary figures, as well as current personalities in the news. It is primarily for American names and includes references to obituaries, book reviews, and bibliographies about a particular person, living or dead.


Book Review Digest [1905 - current] is a guide to book reviews of current English fiction and non-fiction books published in the U.S., Canada and Great Britain. Many of the other more subject-oriented periodical indexes include a book review section in the back so you may want to consult them for additional reviews. 


Criminal Justice Abstracts [2000 - current] contains hundreds of in-depth abstracts of current books, journal articles, and reports published world-wide.

 

Essay and General Literature Index [1934 - current] provides subject and author access to individually authored essays in books dealing with the humanities and social sciences. Though not a periodical index, it is an important resource for locating article and essay length research in books.

 

Old Testament Abstracts [Feb. 2003 - current] features indexing and abstracts for journal articles, monographs, multi-author works, and software related to Old Testament studies. Topics covered include antiquities, archaeology, biblical theology, philology and much more.  

 

 

Storage - The following indexes and abstracts are available at the Berntsen Library in storage.  The dates indicate the years held at the library.

 

Business Periodicals Index [1979 - 2005] is a subject-only index covering business topics, including finance, international business, industry, utilities, management, communications, etc. You can also look under the names of companies and prominent business people for articles about that company or person.


Christian Periodical Index [1956-1999] is an index that covers over 100 selected publications written from an evangelical perspective. It is particularly useful if you are dealing with a church-related or evangelical ministry issue, or if you want a uniquely Christian perspective on a particular topic. For current years, please use the online index available on the campus network.

 

Education Index [1947 - 2006] covers education topics in approximately 300 journals. It includes a book review section in the back.


Guide to Social Science and Religion in Periodical Literature [1965 - 2006] covers 113 religious and non-religious journals that deal with the social sciences and religion. Subject headings may be difficult to use because they are broad, and there is no author access.


Humanities Index [1974 - 2005] covers 345 English language periodicals on topics such as archaeology, area studies, folklore, history, language and literature, performing arts, philosophy, religion and theology. It includes reviews of plays, opera, ballet, movies, videos, television programs, and literary works.


MLA International Bibliography [1973 - 2003] is an annual index covering literary criticism, linguistics, folklore, and related topics in a broad range of journals. It is located in the Reference Collection (R 015.73 M72).


Readers’ Guide to Periodical Literature [1900 - 2005] is a broad, general interest index. If your topic is covered by one of the more specific indexes, you will probably find more information there.


Social Sciences Index [1974 - 2005] covers topics such as anthropology, community health, economics, geography, international relations, minority studies, political science, psychology, social work, sociology, and urban studies.
