Ten Basic DBQ Steps
AP World History
- Read the prompt and determine what is being asked.
- Read each document, underlining each statements, take notes on edges. Identify potential POVs.
- Group documents (use all documents) - groups should answer the prompt, consider using SPRITE. If groups are provided, use them!
- Write thesis statement, include your three groups.
- Begin writing body paragraphs, using facts from documents.
- Types of info you can draw from each document:
- Paraphrase of specific fact, idea
- General idea of document
- Quote - use sparingly
- Analyze the facts drawn from each document by explain their importance and connecting it to the topic of the paragraph AND/OR your thesis statement. You can do this individually or you may group facts together and analyze them together.
- For at least three documents, write a Point of View Statement. This should explain WHY the author's POV may have affected what he has said.
- Add at least two additional documents that provide a perspective AND information not already available - you must explain both of these items to get credit. Put them where they best fit OR in the conclusion.
- Finish writing the essay.
