WEB DESIGN
Course Description: This course deals with the use of Web programming languages, graphics applications, and other Web authoring tools to design, edit, launch, and maintain Web sites and pages. Such topics as Internet theory, Web page standards, Web design elements, user interfaces, special effects, navigation, and emerging Web technologies will be included.
Instructional Philosophy: Rapid technological advancement by businesses to reach global markets, greater focus on industry certifications and national skill standards, expansion of responsibilities of office workers, portability of employee skills—all these increase the need for business students in career education programs to have skills in Web design and maintenance.
Major Course Goals: Create effective Web pages by:
Applying introductory principles.
Exploring legal and ethical issues in Web-related projects.
Designing an effective web site.
Demonstrating image creation and manipulation skills.
Demonstrating page creation skills.
Applying effective web page management techniques.
Using advanced web creation techniques
Major Course Objectives / Benchmarks by Quarter:
1st Quarter:
1. Apply introductory principles.
Explore legal and ethical issues in Web-related projects.
Design an effective web site.
2nd Quarter:
1. Demonstrate image creation and manipulation skills.
2. Demonstrate page creation skills.
3. Apply effective web page management techniques.
4. Use advanced web creation techniques.
Major Course Projects and Instructional Activities:
Evaluate and use web resources.
Recognize different platforms and browsers in relationship to the Web.
Apply copyright laws in all Web-related projects.
Practice personal Internet safety and investigate security issues.
Evaluate Web sites and identify the target audience.
Select content, layout, navigational structure, color schemes and fonts for a Web site.
Recognize different image types and use image editing programs.
Maintain site security and organize content files into folder management.
Course Assessment Plan:
The following assessments will be used in Web Design:
Performance tests
Projects assessed by using scoring guides and peer evaluation forms
Course Expectations: Students are expected to conduct themselves in this course just as they would in a business office by always respecting themselves and others, following through on work commitments and responsibilities, and striving their best to earn a good wage, which in this course will be their grade.
Supplies and Materials Needed: Paper, pen, and a cooperative attitude.
Homework Policy and Grading Scale: Graded assignments, both written and computer, will be given a percentage grade. The grading scale for these percentage grades will be:
A 100-95 B- 82-80 D+ 69-67
A- 94-90 C+ 79-77 D 66-63
B+ 89-87 C 76-73 D- 62-60
B 86-83 C- 72-70 F 59 and below
Your Web Design grade will be calculated as follows:
Daily Work and Assignments 40%
Tests 50%
Work Habits and Attitude 10% (partially determined by attendance)
Extra Help: Students may stay after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays for extra help or to work on the computers to catch up on assignments.
