The difference between ‘try’ and ‘triumph’ is just a little umph! -- Marvin Phillips.
Upon my return from bicycling 111 miles around Tucson, Arizona, I had a little call from my doctor about a little issue. After a few months of injections (I really don’t like needles), on February 29, 2008, I was the proud mother of an 18 oz. tumor. You know, some people go to the hospital and go home with babies; I went home with a scar and fire in my belly.
My friends, I am BACK!
Back to the fray. Back for the fight. Back to continue my support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Back to push through every mile with grace and style. And sweat.
And some dirt. And perhaps some unpleasantness while climbing a hill and/or mountain.
This is my fourth journey with Team in Training and The L&L Society and this will be the best. With your help over the years, you and I raised over $16,000 and with a little UMPH, this year we can get it up to $20,000. Together – we’ll continue to save a life.
Won’t even need a cape or shiny tights to do it.
How? How does a bike ride save a life?
That $16,000 funded research, paid medical bills, housed a family, trained nurses in patient care, trained doctors in emerging treatments for a specific blood cancer, taught a wellness class. By doing all that, it left someone unburdened so they could focus on one thing: live, survive.
Why? Why do I care? Why is this important to me?
The L&L Society funds more research and medical care then most of the groups out there. They provide services across the country and the need is growing every day. Did you know, One in Five people will develop some form of cancer – that’s the current national average.
Who? Who are these One in Five?
A cycling friend who in 2003 had her life turned over by cancer and is now a Mommy. A mother of a friend who was so beautiful in life and now in spirit. An odd sales associate at my local sporting goods store who embraces everyday with really strange jokes and a huge smile. A husband, a poker buddy, a neighbor, a co-worker… That’s who.
What? What can I do?
Well, since I don't currently have the technology to go to the future and locate the cure and my letter to Hogwarts has yet to appear (so conjuring up a cure is out), I will ride my bicycle..
I will deal with a day of sore muscles and aching limbs – it’s just one day for me. One day will save one life. I will ask you for support. Yeah, that’s what I’ll do.
When?
October 4, 2008, it will be me, my teammates, my bike and 104 miles along the eastern shore of Maryland - A moving memorial and celebration for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the families it touches. This will not be easy. This is what I will do. Every mile ridden, every dollar raised… it’s all worth it if it saves a life. Do this with me.
When someone asks you, “What’d you do this weekend?” you will say, “I saved a life.”
Thank you so much for your time and your support!
