The writer devotes a lot of time and effort to the writing process (collecting, drafting, reviewing, and editing). S/he has worked hard to make the story wonderful.

The story is very well organized. One idea or scene follows another in a logical sequence with clear transitions.

There is an appropriate amount of dialogue to bring the characters to life. It is always clear which character is speaking.

Many vivid, descriptive words are used to tell when and where the story took place.

It is easy for the reader to understand the problem the main character faces and why it is a problem. The solution to the character's problem is easy to understand, and is logical. There are no loose ends.

The writer used mentor texts to raise the quality of his/her writing. It is clear, when reading the story, s/he has imitated another writer’s craft and/or structure in the lead, closing, and/or body of the text.

A complete first draft was handed in by 8:45 a.m. on 2/29/08.

The writer edits his/her story for: proper spelling of Word Study Words, punctuation, and complete sentences.

The published piece is readable, clean, and attractive. It is free of erasures and crossed-out words. The illustrations match the text or enhance it. It looks like the author took great pride in creating a finished product.
