Session #5 -- available for note taking!

CLEA history
Good old days--1991 start by dean at No Carolina School for the Arts (Bill Tribbe?). Keenan Institute for the Arts funding initially. Met in NY fully funded, first in 1994, through the 90's. White Oak Plantation opulence. Seed money ended. Dues began in 2000 at $1,000/year per institution and self-run. Dues going forward--challenge for some schools.

Administrative structure--not formalized. 501(c)3 too challenging so far. Cornish financial folks do that work. Volunteer co-chairs; Rob/Dean/Ron. Should we formalize admin structure?

Reporting the impact of conference work after the fact.
Comparison survey (Kim) from 5-6 years ago as baseline
FIPSE grant--discontinued
formalize the site visits? establish criteria? not full accreditation but moving in that direction

CLEA affiliation as anchor in our depts for administrative support
list on our institutional websites--(other orgs to list there too?)
printed materials to share within institutions

Performance vs all arts schools? outreach to other schools? differences in students and teaching within liberal arts (dancers vs artists; jazz vs classical) not addressed in this conference;  recognizing differences (and similarities)

CLEA is hard to use as leverage when it's so 'atomized' and unfocused. Sharing together vs a formal role; how does liberal arts affect the artists' life? position papers? assistance from AACU? CLEA panel at an AACU conference to raise awareness and consciousness?

Review teams--good for reviewed schools and reviewers schools

Principles and statements of purpose needed--statement of values. Who/how to work on.

Through participation in regional accreditation issues--connections?

Website--there is a mission statement. Expanding the resources here. How schools approach certain issues in teaching liberal arts on their campuses. What's possible with the website--who might manage (Camille suggested Berklee help?) Jack too and Billy. Refine and develop the site.

    Google sites? posting, arranging information, democratic and open, using this to list and assign tasks starting immediately;

Volunteers to do specific things: website, site visits, documents, and commit to follow through.

Clubby vs formalized? Jack--formal unlikely; instead FOLLOW UP and accountability for posting and other ideas. Build a track record of accomplishments as an organization. Then decide the next steps.

modest goals to achieve and move forward. build the foundation first. Jack

Communication methods to sustain. message board, listserv, blog, email liaison on each campus, Facebook, (internship from UArts?)

send Christa full email list (looking for 10 first year writing people)

using UArts course management site (Megan)

Memberships? Who and how do schools join CLEA, process?

Awareness at upper administration level--how to manage?
send (snail mail) thank you letter to hchalmiers@mcnallysmith.edu (President of McNally Smith); cc to Janis Weller (jweller@mcnallysmith.edu) Chair, Liberal Arts Division; Cliff Wittstruck, Dean of Academic Affairs (cwittstruck@mcnallysmith.edu)
McNally Smith College of Music, 19 E. Exchange St., St. Paul, MN 55101

collect and send these to Ron (others too?)
    use your titles for leverage
