Congratulations on the biggest Democratic landslide in decades! We now have a Democrat in the White House and majorities in the Senate, House, State Senate, State Assembly and a progressive Democratic majority on the SF Board Supervisors. Despite all the difficulties faced by San Francisco, California, the US and the planet we can finally have trust in our leadership and hope for the future. Hope springs eternal from our President Obama. The daily announcements from the White House come at a staggering pace and each time the decision and direction are well thought out, clear and more often than not right on the money.
Looking back over the last year, I am also happy to report the District 3 Democratic Club had the following achievements:
A record number of paid members
A Slate Card that was distributed to 19,000 registered Democrats, Greens and Non-partisans in District 3, receiving more money from participating candidates than ever before
Thousands of voters registered (probably no other SF club registered more voters)
New Facebook group
Our new www.d3dc.org website debuted and has had over 1,000 visitors in the past 8 months
Great attendance for all social events: 3 Presidential debates, 1 Vice-Presidential debate, Election Night and Holiday Party
All our events were well publicized on our website, Yelp!, SF political blogs and sometimes the Examiner, Guardian, MeetUp and Chinatown press
Increased savings and improved financial status over last year
Numerous speakers at our events and endorsement nights including the majority of the Supervisors
Most recently, we had a very special “A Talk with Aaron Peskin: Reflections and Looking Ahead” event. The club recognized Supervisor Peskin for his 8 years of service to the District and City. Clearly, no other elected official worked harder and got more results over the past 8 years. That kind of effort not only comes from a great work ethic but a fundamental caring for the city and its well being. The attendees that night clearly appreciated all Aaron has done for the community and the guest of honor treated the audience to a fantastic monologue of memories, reflections and insights followed by an audience Q&A. A write up on that event will be covered by Tony Long in our newsletter later this year.
We have an exciting year of events planned. Most immediately we’re looking forward to two events: On April 23rd we are holding a joint meeting featuring Senator Mark Leno on the California Universal Health Care Act and co-sponsored by four of our fellow Democratic Clubs. On April 29th we will be joined by our new Supervisor and Board President, David Chiu.
