Las maquinas auxiliares cubren las necesidades del motor principal y de la caldera; mantienen al buque seco y adrizado, cubren las necesidades domesticas, permiten que el motor principal entregue potencia de propulsión y ayudan en la maniobra, suministra energía eléctrica e iluminación, realizan el amare del barco y la maniobra de carga, proveen seguridad.
