God Centered Group Bible StudyPremise: God's word is our only hope for change. Solid exegesis is integral to not only personal, but also to a group study.
Goals: Teaching people how to do a good group Bible study should teach them how to study on there own.
Must not teach excessively, lead by questions, start with only the simplest and most necessary principles, make it an enjoyable experience.
Common problems with people handling the Word of God well are: ignorance, doubt, disobedience. The first part will deal with ignorance head on.
Part 1
Pray!
Crawling
Start with small sections of Scripture (2 to 5 relationships). Hopefully gives a consistent senses of accomplishment/"We're doing something".
Summarize the study to date (possibly could happen or re-happen in a more condensed form before asking how text relates to the study to date in walking section)
Do exegesis: first, slowly and as a group.
Go thought by thought asking about: vocabulary and phraseology (referencing English language knowledge, other passages) and whether/how the current proposition relates to previous ones
Form consensus as to what the authors main point was in this section alone.
Walking
Have someone summarize the text looking for consensus.
Ask how this text relates to the study to date.
Part 2:The goal for part 2 is to deal with doubt and disobedience head on.
Pray!
Look forward to flushing these out some more after we meet next.
