Using Google Earth on a Shared Computer - File Management Tips.
Using Google Earth on a school or library computer can be a little tricky until you fully understand
Here are some tips and tricks.
-
TEMPORARY PLACES
When you open a New KMZ file Google Earth automatically puts it in Temporary Places.
Any files left in Temporary Places will go away as soon as you exit Google Earth.
You can move files from Temporary Places to My Places by right clicking and choosing Save to My Places.
-
MY PLACES
Files under My Places are available only when using Google Earth under the same login name.
Schools and libraries are often set up to delete any personal files, so even files saved here could disappear on these types of computers.
When using a home or personal computer, your MY PLACES folder could get too big. So even on home computer it's a good idea to keep your KMZ (Google Earth) files organized in another location.
If Google Earth crashes, you could also lose some of your work that was located in My Places.
In other words - Save Places AS is a good idea!
-
SAVE KMZ's in other locations (thumbdrive, other folder, network folder).
To do this use SAVE PLACE AS (and do it often)
Just make sure you are highlighting the TOP level folder or KMZ to include everything when you save.
ALERT! Most common mistake is to have only a PlaceMark highlighted when you save.
Then the 30 placemarks you have worked on disappear and you are left with ONLY one placemark, because that was the only thing highlighted when you saved.
Follow these steps.
