Mathlincs: A Global Collaborative Math Project

Strengthening Global Ties Through Math Conversations

Math Lincs is a collaborative project for 5th and 6th grade math students from around the world. We share our math ideas in a variety of projects which are organized by strands. We use a variety of technologies including blogging, videos, podcasting, GoogleEarth , SKYPE and Voice Thread.

Objectives:

Vocabulary: Math Wiki: Students add definitions, pictures and videos to help build an online Math Vocabulary Wiki.

Number Sense: SKYPE an Expert. Students connect by SKYPE to people in different professions and ask questions about how they use math in their jobs.

Algebraic Sense: Local Math Stories: Students are given a list of Algebraic Equations and then challenged to create Math Stories that fit the equation. The math stories can be presented in Word, PowerPoint, Photo Story or Movie format. Math Stories should be about local culture, or landmarks.

Probability And Statistics: Global Changes: Students collect data to show environmental changes in their area. Students will create graphs and present their data, using their choice of presentation tools.

Geometry: Geometric Landmarks: Students will add local landmarks to a shared VoiceThread. They will create a geometry word problem to go with their picture. Students in other classes will show how they would solve the problems. These problems and pictures will be included on a GoogleEarth tour.

Measurement: Food Miles: Students will determine the carbon imprint of certain foods in their area. Computing distance from farm to table, type of transportation used and other environmental costs. Students will share and compare their findings using GoogleDocs. Classes will then collaborate to create a recipe book of local foods using Google Docs.
