Padlock and key (If you have lockable door in the teaching area, substitute the padlock with the key for that door),   Other random keys (at least seven),   Medium-sized bowl

Setup

Place the keys in the bowl.

Activity

1. Write the verse on a chalk/wipe board and read it as a group once.

2. Explain the following:

Our big idea for today is "Jesus is king of the universe." In this verse, Jesus tells his followers that all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to him. Authority means being in charge. God gave his son, Jesus, authority over everything. Jesus is in charge of all of heaven and earth. There's no place you can go where Jesus isn't in control. He's the king of the universe.
To remind us that God gave Jesus authority over everything, we're going to play a game with keys as we learn our v. That's because the person with the keys is usually the one in charge. If you hold the keys, you get to pick where to drive the car. If you hold the keys, you can choose who you let in your house and who you lock out.
We have a bunch of keys and one lock. Only one of these keys has the authority to open this lock. We'll see which one of you picks the correct key.

3. Have one child come up to the board and erase a word from the verse. Read the verse as a group. Instruct the child to select a key from the bowl and then return to his/her seat. Repeat this until all the keys have been selected and the children know the verse.
After, have each child try their key in the lock to see who selected the right key.
