Matthew 1:18-25, Luke 1:26-38

Big Idea

When God asks, say "Yes!"

Verse

Luke 11:28 - He replied, "Instead, blessed are those who hear God's word and obey it." (NIrV)

Materials

Two walkie talkies

Setup

Turn the walkie talkies on and set them to the same channel.

Activity

1. Write the verse on a chalk/wipe board and read it as a group once.

2. Explain the following:

Our big idea today is "When God asks, say "Yes!" That's exactly what Mary said when God asked her to be the mother of God's son, Jesus. The main way God asks us to do things today is through his word to us, the Bible. This verse tells us that those who hear God's word, the Bible, and obey it (or say "Yes!") are blessed, or truly happy.

As we learn this verse, we're going to do something to help us remember the two big parts of this: hear and obey.

3. Each time you read through the verse as a group, do the following: select two volunteers and hand each a walkie talkie. Show each which button to press to talk. Have one stand by the board. Have the other go to the other side of the room, or even into another room if possible. Have the distant child tell the child by the board via walkie talkie two words he/she wishes to have erased. Have him/her say "Over!" into the walkie talkie to indicate he/she's finished talking. (This part represents "hearing the word of God".) Then, have the child by the board say, into his/her walkie talkie, the words the other child wanted erased, followed by the phrase, "Roger that!" Then, have him/her erase those words. (This part represents "obeying the word of God" that we hear.)

Read through the verse as a group, and repeat this process with new volunteers. Continue until all the words have been erased.
