BEATITUDES-PURE IN HEART

"Blessed Are The Pure in Heart”

Matthew 5:8

Big Idea

Love God most.

Verse

Matthew 5:8 - "Blessed are those whose hearts are pure. They will see God. (NIrV)

Materials

1. Plate   2. Ketchup  3. Large plastic tub   4. Squirt gun   5. Masking tape

Setup

1. Place the plastic tub on a table. If possible, prop up one side of the tub (using books or whatever else works) so that tub is at about a 45° angle, with the inside of the tub now able to be viewed by the children.

2. On the floor, place a strip of masking tape four or five feet from the tub.

Activity

1. Read through the verse as a group once.

2. Explain the following:

Our big idea today is "Love God Most." In this verse, Jesus tells us that we are blessed, or truly happy, when are hearts are pure, when we love God more than anything else.

As we learn our verse, we're going to try to remember that pure means "not mixed with anything else." We're going to take a dirty dish and, using this squirt guy, help make it pure again.

Squirt ketchup all over the plate, smearing it around until the plate is covered. Place the dish, ketchup-side up, in the tub.

3. Each time you read through the verse as a group, do the following:

Read through the verse as a group. Select a child who made a good effort to read the verse with the group. Hand him/her the squirt gun. Have him/her stand behind the masking tape line and squirt the dirty plate 1-2 times with the squirt gun, trying to make the plate more "pure."

Erase one word of the verse and repeat with a different child. Continue until the verse is complete and the plate is "pure."
