"Wandering in the Desert: part 1”

Exodus 15:22-17:7

Big Idea

God takes care of us.

Schedule

1. Small Groups: Food and water activity (5 min)

2. Big Group: Lesson (20 min)

3. Verse Activity: Popcorn activity (5 min)

3. Small Groups: Dice game (10-15 min)

Materials Needed

-large piece of paper, pencil

Before Big Group

1. Ask, "If you could only eat one kind of food for every single meal for the next 40 years, which kind would you pick?" As the children respond, have one child be the recorder, writing down each answer on the large piece of paper.

2. Explain and ask, "Besides food, our bodies need water to survive. Where are some places you can find water to drink?" As the children respond, have the recorder write down each answer on the other side of the paper. Bring this paper to big group time.

After Big Group

1. Explain the following:

    Our big idea for today is "God takes care of us." We can still this from how God took care of the Israelites, and also from today's Bible verse, Philippians 4:19

2. Play the following game:

    Have one child say the following: "God takes care of me by ______" and then filling in the blank with one thing God provides for them. Have the child next to them repeat the phrase with the first child's answer and add a second answer on the end. Continue this process of each child repeating the previous list of answers and adding one more until each child has gone.
    If your children might have trouble remembering the answers, you may select a child at the beginning to record each answer as it is said.
    If you wish, as a reward after each child finishes, you may allow them to eat something from the lesson's prizes (Nerds, gummy worms, M&Ms, peanut butter and jelly sandwich).

3. Hand each child a journal page. Have them fill it out, writing down the big idea “God takes care of us.” and how they can use it in their life (Examples: I can worry less because I know God will take care of me). Place the page in their journal binder.
