Topic/Title of Project
Rice 7 Math Pythagorean World: How does the Pythagorean Theorem Connect to the World We Live In?

ESSENTIAL QUESTION

How does the Pythagorean Theorem
connect to the world we live in?

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Join us on our web quest as we research Pythagoras's connection with our lives today.

Students will have the opportunity to explore the history of the Pythagorean Theorem, apply it to real world situations, prove a right triangle by using the Pythagorean Theorem, and create their own situation that necessitates using the Pythagorean Theorem to solve.

ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS

  1. The Pythagorean Theorem is universally important.
  2.  We use proofs to support mathematical claims.
  3. The Pythagorean Theorem can be applied to many aspects of our lives.

GUIDING QUESTIONS
  1. What is the Pythagorean Theorem?
  2. How do we use/prove the Pythagorean Theorem?
  3. How can our 'search of proof' be applied to other aspects of our lives?

MINI-LESSONS
MINI-LESSON AIMS

What will I teach to support these skills?

RIGOR

ACTIVITIES / ASSESSMENTS

How will I know if each student has mastered the mini-lesson?

ENGAGEMENT

OPPS. for DIFFERENTIATION
How can the activity or assessment be modified to meet the needs of different learners?
DIFFERENTIATION
How do we use Webquests to discover mathematical concepts?

-Define Webquest
-Explain how Webquests are constructed
Students will
  • try the following webquests:

1.) What in the world is a shape?
2.) A Pizza Family Reunion
Groups select their role in completing each task
How do we classify triangles by sides and angles?
Mathscore - Grade 5
Topic 57 Triangle Types
I can check each student's progress
Students work at their own pace
What are the basic features of Geometer's Sketchpad.Students will
  • create scalene, isosceles, and equilateral triangles
  • display the side lengths for each triangle

1.) What are the properties of right triangles?
Students begin Pythagorean Theorem Webquest

2.) Who is Pythagoras?
-Students read about Pythagoras and watch a short video clip on their webquest
Students will
  • take the Right Triangle Quiz

Students will
  • write a blog about who Pythagoras is, what the Pythagorean Theorem is, and what it can be used for.
Students are shown the Evaluation Rubric and are aware made aware of the differences between Beginning, Developing, Qualified, and Exemplary Scores.
How do we use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing side lengths for a right triangle?

- Students are shown examples
Students will
  • complete a handout from HOLT which was collected and graded
Early finishers were able to begin their Mathscore task.

Individual assistance was given to students who were struggling
How can we review our ability to use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing side lengths of a right triangle and apply these skills to a solve a problem and explain our process?
1.) Students will
  • work on the Mathscore portion of their Webquest

2.) Students will
  • complete a Math Journal
I can monitor student progress. Also- students are made aware of how their Mathscore work affects their Webquest grade

-Students can create a screen capture of themselves completing the Mathscore task

2.) Students are given a grading rubric for the math journal and a vocabulary word bank to assist their writing.
1.) How do we demonstrate our ability to use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the missing side length of a right triangle?

-Students Practice 5 problems before their evaluation

2.) How do we create a right triangle using Geometer's Sketchpad and use the Pythagorean Theorem to prove our work.

-Students learn how to use the Pythagorean Theorem using Geometer's Sketchpad

-Students must figure out how to use parallel and perpendicular lines to create a right triangle.
1.) Students will
  • take the basic Pythagorean Theorem Quiz embedded into their webquest

2.) Students will
  • follow the Geometer's Sketchpad directions and will save and print their work
1.) Students can refer back to any of the information on the Webquest before taking the quiz.

2.) Students can use the rubric to determine what they  need to do to submit exemplary work. They are given as much time as they need (for the day) to complete the task

-Students who finish early will have the opportunity to create a screencast demonstrating how they constructed and proved their work.
How can we apply the Pythagorean Theorem to solve relevant "real world" problems?

What are other situations that the Pythagorean Theorem applies to?
Groups will create and solve their own Pythagorean Theorem Story Problem
Groups work on their webquests to complete the mission that was assigned.
Small group support
Why is the Pythagorean Theorem Important?
Students will
  • complete the conclusion of their webquest
Small group support
How can I create an online comic book  to illustrate the usefulness of the Pythagorean Theorem in daily life?
-Students see an example created by Ms. Rice

-Students see a teacher created example
Students will
  • write their scripts
  • work together to edit and revise.
Small group support
Students are introduced to Comic Life and begin working on their Comic Life Pythagorean Theorem situation

Small group support
Student finish any components of the project that they may be missing
